Michael "Mike" Danton (* 21st October 1980 as Michael Sage Jefferson in Brampton , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who since January 2014 the Polish first division KH Sanok is under contract. Danton completed a total of 92 games for the New Jersey Devils and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League between 2000 and 2005 . He was then sentenced to seven and a half years in a US prison and released in early 2010 for good conduct.

Career

Mike Danton began his career in 1997 under his original name Mike Jefferson in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting . He stayed in the OHL for three years and played for three teams. In the 1999/2000 season he had his best year when he scored 87 points in 58 games and reached the final of the Memorial Cup . Previously, he was instrumental in winning the Colts' J. Ross Robertson Cup .

He was then selected by the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the fifth round at position 135 and joined their farm team , the Albany River Rats from the American Hockey League . There he had a good first year and also came to two appearances for the Devils in the National Hockey League . After refusing to play for the AHL farm team in the 2001-02 season , he was suspended by the Devils for the entire season.

In the summer of 2002 he changed his last name to Danton, for which he stated that he wanted to distance himself from his family and especially his father.

At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he was in the NHL roster of the New Jersey Devils, but after 17 games he was sent back to the AHL. When Danton again refused to report to the Albany River Rats, another suspension followed. After the season he was eventually transferred to the St. Louis Blues . There he finally made the leap into the NHL and completed the entire season with the team.

The David Frost case

Shortly after leaving the playoffs , Danton was arrested by the FBI on suspicion of commissioning a murder. On July 16, 2004, Danton pleaded guilty in court of attempting to hire a hit man for $ 10,000. He gave no information about the name of the intended victim. The prosecution and court assumed it was his agent David Frost. He was eventually sentenced to seven and a half years in prison by a US court with no possibility of early parole .

Danton first met Frost at the age of ten and was henceforth promoted by him. Frost exerted more and more influence on Danton and was able to pull him on his side when he was reported by Mike Danton's family in 2001 for child abuse of Danton's younger brother Tom. Frost was never convicted because several witnesses contradicted Tom Jefferson's testimony. Mike Danton distanced himself from his family and changed his last name.

According to his testimony in court, Danton wanted to kill his sponsor because he owed him money. During the trial against Danton, Frost tried to influence him and told him in detail what to say at the trial. Frost himself was arrested in autumn 2006 for sex crimes against minors between 1995 and 2001.

Future prospects

Mike Danton's career as a professional ice hockey player in North America is basically over with the conviction. He no longer receives an entry permit for the USA. But since the Canadian teams play at least 30 games per season in the USA, it is hardly conceivable that a team will sign him. At most, a continuation of the career overseas seems possible.

comeback

After serving his sentence, Mike Danton enrolled at Saint Mary's University Halifax in the province of Nova Scotia in January 2010 and subsequently supported the ice hockey team. In March 2010 he won the championship of the Atlantic Conference with the Huskies and then the first Canadian university championship in ice hockey for Saint Mary's. On July 29, 2011, he received a contract for a season with the Swedish third division club IFK Ore , but after good performance he moved to the Czech club Orli Znojmo in the Austrian Erste Bank Ice Hockey League in mid-December 2011 . There he ended the season and signed a contract with the British club Coventry Blaze in May 2012 . However, Danton was unable to join the team in August 2012 because the British authorities repeatedly refused him a residence permit. So Danton returned to Sweden and played for Kramfors-Alliansen in Division 1.
