The Rio Vermelho microregion was a microregion defined by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) for internal geostatistical purposes from 1989 to 2017. It was one of a total of 18 microregions in the state of Goiás in the mid-west of Brazil . It belonged to the mesoregion of Northwest Goiás . The namesake is the Rio Vermelho , which starts in the southeast at Goiás Velho and flows through the entire region in the middle to the northwest and flows into the Rio Araguaia at the northwest border . The microregion does not belong to the administrative units of Brazil and was replaced by a different regional division in 2017.

The most important city is Goiás Velho, the former capital of Goiás until 1937. Because of its historic center with many Baroque buildings from the 18th century, the city was in 2002 in the UNESCO - World Heritage List was added.

In the southeast the landscape is shaped by the Serra Dourada . Its highest point is in the south of Goiás Velho with 1056 m. To the northwest of this mountain range extends the slightly hilly Rio Araguaia plain with the lowest point in the region of 286 m near Aruanã .
