Milan Borjan ( Serbian - Cyrillic Милан Борјан ; born October 23, 1987 in Knin , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian - Canadian football goalkeeper . Since 2011 he has also been on the squad for the Canadian national football team .

Club career

Youth career on three continents

Born in Knin in what is now Croatia in 1987 , Borjan began his active football career in his homeland at the time at FK Radnički Belgrade . After he was born in what is now the Croatian city, he moved to Belgrade with his Serbian family at a young age, only to move to Canada a few years later during the Yugoslav wars, where the family first settled in Winnipeg . Previously, the family had some difficulties with entry as they also applied for a visa in the United States or Australia, but refused there and only approved by Canada. After only a year in Winnipeg, they finally moved to Hamilton , where other family members already lived. There Borjan continued his career at the local Mount Hamilton Youth Soccer Club . In the following years, his family had to work hard for his career in football, mainly because Milan Borjan wanted to continue his career in Europe. Borjan, who always asserted that he had only continued his career for his parents but above all for his father, also came through his parents to various trial training sessions at larger local clubs. Through his relationship as a Hamilton Thunder player , his father, who once played in the Hajduk Split youth team, came into contact with various South American clubs. Through his father, the 17-year-old finally came to Argentina, where he played briefly for the Argentinian club CA Boca Juniors before he moved to Uruguay , where his father had arranged trial training for him. After he was finally under contract with Nacional Montevideo until 2006, he was associated with the next major Argentine club, River Plate . After initial difficulties, Borjan was only accepted into the Argentine second team, which he left only a year later in order to seek another move, this time bringing him to Quilmes AC , one of the oldest clubs in Argentine football . There he was partly in the professional squad until 2009, although he never made it to a compulsory professional game in the course of his engagement there. Borjan had little assertiveness against the experienced players like Marcelo Luis Pontiroli or Augustín Gómez as well as Julio César Salva from his own offspring .

Change to Europe

Just a few days before the end of the transfer period, Borjan completed a successful trial training session at FK Rad , where he was only the third goalkeeper in the squad after being accepted. During this time, Branislav Danilović , Serbian U-21 national player , was in the squad of the capital's club. Borjan himself was brought into the team as a replacement after the rise of Danilović as the first goalkeeper, after the departure of Damir Kahriman . He made his debut relatively soon after the team's first goalkeeper was temporarily unable to play after problems with the papers and the player who was set as the second goalkeeper was injured. After his SuperLiga debut in a 3-2 win over FK Smederevo on August 16, 2009 Borjan was used in numerous other championship games and had to accept 16 goals in 13 completed games by the end of the season, but also played four times to zero. In the first few rounds still without use, Borjan established himself as the goalkeeper of the Belgrade team from round 4 and was then used in almost every league game of the club. With 16 goals conceded and twelve games to zero in 23 missions, he developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the league, which meant that they even thought about calling Borjan into the Serbian national team . Due to his achievements, the Canadian national coach Stephen Hart and his assistant coach Tony Fonseca became aware of the young goalkeeper. After discussions with his father and his Serbian manager, Milan Borjan decided to represent his second home, Canada, if he was called up. While he was still on a successful run in the top Serbian league with the FK Rad, which ended with fourth place in the table and the opportunity to participate in the first qualifying round for the 2011/12 Europa League , he was called up to the squad for the first time by the Canadian national coach.

For the 2011/12 season Borjan moved to the Turkish first division club Sivasspor . Here he immediately fought for a regular place. In February 2014 he left Sivasspor. In September 2014, the reigning Bulgarian champion Ludogorez Razgrad signed him . There he came in the first half of 2014/15 as a representative of Wladislaw Stojanow only on two missions. At the beginning of 2015 he left the club and moved to FK Radnički Niš in Serbia. In the summer of 2015 he returned to Ludogorez. In the 2015/16 season he came as a substitute for Vladislav Stojanow on six missions and won the Bulgarian championship. In the second half of the 2016/17 season he was loaned to Korona Kielce in the Polish Ekstraklasa .

National team career

Borjan was first called up for the friendly international match against Greece on February 9, 2011, and he was brought into the squad together with the experienced Lars Hirschfeld . In the 1-0 defeat by the Greeks, he was in action for the full game and alongside the players Tosaint Ricketts and David Edgar one of three players who made their debut for Canada that evening. For the international match against Belarus on March 29, 2011, Borjan was called up to join the national team, where he ultimately had to take turns with Norway's legionnaire Hirschfeld. Before another 90-minute friendly match against Ecuador , Stephen Hart, who was born in Yugoslavia, was brought into the Canadian squad that will take part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 in June .
