Miraculi , alternatively The Controller , is a German satirical fiction film by DEFA directed by Ulrich Weiß from 1992.

action

Five friends spend their free time in the “Zur Neuen Welt” café and play billiards. When the last pack of cigarettes falls into a beer glass due to the constant fooling around and is therefore no longer usable, matches are used to draw lots for the person who has to get new cigarettes. It hits Sebastian Müller, who breaks into a kiosk, steals two packs of cigarettes, recognizes the wrong things he was doing and allows himself to be arrested. Such minor offenses are negotiated by the conflict commission of the company in which the accused is employed. Sebastian is sentenced to a fine of 50.00 Marks, but this is not taken from him by the social committee and so he hands over the money to the kiosk operator who is present at the hearing.

But this experience made a difference in Sebastian. In addition to the fine, he wants to ensure more honesty as a tram inspector. Since he does not pass the exam for this very well, he is only admitted as an honorary inspector. In the course of time, the detected fare dodgers become fewer and fewer, as he is now known to the people. Even a disguise doesn't help him and after a disagreement with his father about the control activities, he tries to dissuade the caught passengers from their black trips with good words. Only one young woman has done it to him and she is not controlled, but that too is a mistake. She works in a button factory and is looking forward to the excitement all day, whether or not she is caught without a valid ticket. He took this tension away from her.

One day Sebastian is invited to a party and surfing on his property by a better-off man whom he has already caught several times without a ticket. He is supposed to be tricked and the young woman from the button factory, d. H. the constant fare dodger, be helpful. The morning after the party both disappeared, but the large lake at the foot of the property is no longer there either.

Back in the “Zur Neuen Welt” café, the five friends stand around the pool table, leaving it open whether the past experiences were a fact or just a dream.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films said that Miraculi was an “allegorical film that plays into the time of the fall”. Clear statements would be "neglected in favor of vague hints". In addition, the film is “too artificial to be convincing; The camera work alone gives the picture puzzle some attractive aspects ”.
