Christian Knorr von Rosenroth
Christian Knorr von Rosenroth (* July 15 or July 16, 1636 in Alt-Raudten , Duchy of Wohlau ; † May 4 or May 8, 1689 at Schloss Großalbershof near Sulzbach (Upper Palatinate)) was a German polyhistor , poet , writer and Protestant Hymn poet .
Life
Knorr von Rosenroth was the son of a Silesian pastor, attended the Latin school in Fraustadt , then the pedagogy in Stettin and studied from 1651 in Frankfurt an der Oder and from 1655 in Leipzig theology , law , history , philosophy , classical and modern languages and graduated in 1660 as Master's degree with a dissertation on ancient numismatics . In the following years he conducted private studies, presumably in Wittenberg , and from 1663 to 1666 traveled to the Netherlands , France and England . In the Netherlands he made contact with Christian groups such as the Mennonites , theosophists and spiritually inspired naturalists. Meir Stern taught him Kabbalah . The contact with Franciscus Mercurius van Helmont , the son of the famous Johan Baptista van Helmont , through whose mediation he became court and chancellery of Duke Christian August zu Pfalz-Sulzbach in 1668, became decisive for his life . In the same year he married Susanna Paumgartner († 1696) in Regensburg. He had four children with her, two of whom died early. The son Johann Christian Knorr Baron von Rosenroth (born September 22, 1670 - April 1, 1716) was legation counselor and chamberlain to the Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and from 1705 became envoy for Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel at the Reichstag in Regensburg, where he died. He was buried in the envoys cemetery with an epitaph as a memorial. In the inscription a son and two daughters are mentioned as survivors.
With the support of Christian Knorr von Rosenroth, the Sulzbacher Musenhof was established around 1670 , which had a great influence on the spiritual world of that time. In 1671 van Helmont introduced Christian Knorr von Rosenroth to Leibniz . From 1687 Knorr von Rosenroth was the office director under Christian August.
The lawyer and writer Christian Anton Philipp Knorr von Rosenroth is his nephew.
plant
Knorr von Rosenroth's work contains occasional poems for the Sulzbacher Hof, transfers of collections of natural philosophical works on which he commented extensively, a compilation of writings on Jewish mysticism under the title Kabbala Denudata , with which Knorr von Rosenroth wanted to prove the unified origin of Christian teaching and Kabbalah . The translations into Latin first made many texts of the Kabbalah known to non-Jewish scholars. The work also shows Neoplatonic and natural philosophical influences from Henry More .
Among other things, he translated the Magia naturalis by Giambattista della Porta into German (published 1680), the Ortus medicinae by Johan Baptista van Helmont ( emergence of Arzney art in 1683), the Pseudodoxia epidemica by Thomas Browne (together with Enchiridion Physicae Restitutae by Jean D. 'Espagnet ) and with Mercurius van Helmont the Consolatio philosophiae by Boethius (Sulzbach 1677, Lüneburg 1697).
In 1677 he had an alchemical play printed on the occasion of Leopold I's wedding (Conjugium Phoebi et Palladis).
Of the many songs he composed for private family affairs, the song Morning Glory of Eternity is still in church use today.
