Mount Tabor was originally founded as Harwich on August 28, 1761 . The Benning Wentworth grant went to Jonathan Willard and sixty other settlers. In 1803 the name was changed to Mount Tabor. The reason was problems with the mail delivery. The mail was mistakenly sent to the similar-sounding town of Hardwick. The new name goes back to Gideon Tabor, a veteran of the Civil War , who at the time of his death in 1824 had held the office of town clerk for 28 years and was a justice of the peace in the town for 30 years. The entire area of the town is within the Green Mountain National Forest.
