NGC 2146 is an active bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBab / P in the constellation Giraffe in the northern sky . It is around 46 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 75,000 light years . Together with PGC 18960 (also NGC 2146A ) it forms the optical pair of galaxies KPG 110 .

The galaxy shows severe deformations and an increased star formation rate , suggesting a close encounter with a companion galaxy . However, the spiral galaxy NGC 2146A , which at first glance appears to be a question , is far too far away and probably an object that happens to be in the background. Presumably, NGC 2146 has long since completely absorbed its former companion.

The supernovae SN 2005V (type Ib / c) and SN 2018zd (type II) were observed here.

The object was discovered in 1876 by the German astronomer Friedrich August Theodor Winnecke .
