NGC 6604 is an open star cluster of the Trumpler type I3p in the constellation Snake on the ecliptic, embedded in the HII region Sh2-54 . It has a brightness of 6.5 mag and an angular diameter of 6 arc minutes . The cluster is around 5,500 light years from the solar system.
The relatively young star cluster is the densest area of a star association called " Serpens OB " , which contains a total of around 100 stars of the spectral classes O and B, among them the blue supergiant HD 167971 .
The object was discovered on July 15, 1784 by William Herschel .
