NGC 6581 = IC 1280 is a 14.3 mag bright compact elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type C in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is an estimated 207 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 25,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 4697 .

The object was discovered on July 1, 1870 by Édouard Stephan . Due to an error in Stephen's position, the observation of Guillaume Bigourdan on July 1, 1886 under IC 1280 led to an entry in the index catalog .
