IC 4697 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type S with an active galaxy core in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 227 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with PGC 61565 .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 6581 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on July 29, 1903 .
