NGC 6589 denotes a 10.5 mag bright reflection nebula in the constellation Sagittarius , possibly the remnant of a supernova . It was discovered by Truman Safford on August 28, 1867 . Due to an error in Safford's position information, Edward Barnard's observation in August 1905 under IC 4690 led to an entry in the index catalog .
