NGC 7531 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sbc and is located in the constellation Crane in the southern sky . The galaxy has an angular extent of 4.5 '× 1.7' and an apparent magnitude of 11.3 mag. It is estimated to be 70 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 95,000 ly.

The type Ib / c supernova SN 2012dj was observed here.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on September 2, 1836 .
