Niederscheld is a district of Dillenburg in the Lahn-Dill district in central Hesse with around 2000 inhabitants.
Geographical location
The village is located in the Dill Valley , which is part of the Westerwald . It is located south of the Dillenburg core town of Niederscheld and is surrounded by the Hohes Rad , Horst and Gleichen elevations on the western edge of the Scheldt Forest . The eponymous Scheldt and Dill flow through the village , as well as numerous small streams such as Lützelbach and Hustenbach.
history
The village is first mentioned on October 22, 1274 as a scourge . Heydenreich von Dernbach sold properties in the village to the Keppel monastery . Between 1470 and 1490, the plague ruled village life. In 1472 an infirmary was built. The Reformation reached the place around 1530 .
In 1604 the Scheldt hammer was built , which was used for iron smelting. During the Thirty Years War , Niederscheld was attacked and plundered several times by troops who besieged the Dillenburg Castle. Niedereld was persecuted by witches from 1629 to 1630 . Three women got into witch trials and were executed.
After a major fire in the village in 1756, Niederscheld came to the Grand Duchy of Berg in 1806 and belonged to the Sieg department , which meant that the place became French. The Frank brothers bought the Schelder Hammer in 1839 and renamed it Adolfshütte . With the construction of the Dill route (1862) and the Schelden Valley Railway (1882), iron smelting increased in the Adolfshütte .
During the Second World War , Niederscheld with its extensive railway and industrial facilities was bombed several times. The village was largely destroyed in an air raid on February 25, 1945. At the end of the war only 80 people lived in Niederscheld.
Niedereld became known nationwide in the media due to the 2006 Scheldt flood, which hit the place hard.
On June 28, 2019, a 250-kg aerial bomb was found above the Adolfshütte industrial park. For this purpose, around 5,700 people were evacuated. This is divided as follows: Niederscheld with around 2000 inhabitants and around 3700 citizens in the south of the core city .
Territorial reform
In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the community of Niederscheld was incorporated into the city of Dillenburg at the same time as other communities on January 1, 1977 by the law on the reorganization of the Dill district, the districts of Gießen and Wetzlar and the city of Gießen . For the district of Niederscheld, as for the other incorporated, formerly independent municipalities, a local district with a local advisory council and local councilor was formed.

For the hitherto inexplicable mark, a hammer was used for Niederscheld, which refers to the once flourishing trade of nail smiths here.
