Nikolaus Andreas von Katzler
Nikolaus Andreas von Katzler (also: Katzeler ) (born September 1696 in Maastricht ; † November 10, 1760 in Gardelegen ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , head of the Gensdarmes regiment and knight of the Order of the Black Eagle . He was also the heir to the Grimminghausen estate .
Life
origin
He was the son of Wilhelm Ludolph von Katzler († 1700) and his wife Helene Christina, born von Bersword († 1744). His father was a captain in the Dutch dragoons .
Military career
After Katzler had initially been in Dutch service, he switched to Prussian in 1715 and was employed as a cornet in Cuirassier Regiment No. 2 . He fought bravely during the siege of Stralsund, but ended up in Swedish captivity. But the Swedish King Charles XII. was an eyewitness and ordered him to be treated well and Katzler was soon replaced. On August 26, 1728 he became a lieutenant and in 1730 he was the youngest Rittmeister . On July 6, 1733 he became major , in 1741 lieutenant colonel and in 1742 colonel . In June 1745 he was appointed Major General conveyed as well as on 13 October Amtshauptmann of Liebenwalde and Zeddenick appointed.
In August 1746 he became chief of the body cuirassier regiment . In June 1748 he received the prebend from Münster-Eiffel . In 1753 he became lieutenant general and in 1754 knight of the Order of the Black Eagle.
He fought in the First and Second Silesian Wars , as well as in the Seven Years War . He fought in the battle of Chotusitz , Hohenfriedberg , Soor , Lobositz and Catholic-Hennersdorf .
Due to an illness he had to leave the army in 1757, but still formally remained chief of the body cuirassier regiment.
Katzler is considered one of the best cavalrymen in the Prussian army. His leadership made the Leibregiment one of the best regiments for a long time. General Seydlitz is said to have said about his death : "We won't get a Katzler back". He disciplined the troops and looked after his people, and he also paid for his quarters. Troops were housed privately at the time, the host then had to take care of the officer.
His name was immortalized in 1851 on one of the plaques on the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great .
