The Nikon D4 is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Nikon , which was launched in February 2012. It was designed for professional use.
technical features
What is new about the D4 compared to the D3 is essentially the video function in Full HD format at 30 fps and 720p at 60 fps. Instead of two CompactFlash cards as in the previous models, one of the two slots in the D4 corresponds to the XQD memory card standard , which - important for videos - allows much faster data flows. Further innovations in the hardware are sensor cleaning and an "Info" button for quickly displaying the most important settings on the screen. The 16,2- megapixels - full frame - image sensor enables shooting with 4928 × 3280 pixels is clearly sensitive to light and therefore less noise than the sensor of the D3.
In addition, there are firmware innovations such as HDRI generation from series of exposures , flash exposure correction from the camera or the option to switch the automatic ISO adjustment on and off using the setting wheel - a function that you are still looking for in the depths of the menu on the D3 had to. Appearance, weight and handling are largely identical to the D3 and its successor, the D5 .
equipment
Network connections
With the manufacturer's own WT-4 and WT-5 transmitter units , the camera supports data transmission via WLAN and Ethernet . An RJ-45 connection connects the camera to the Ethernet via cable, which enables various services (image transmission via FTP protocol, remote control via camera control, HTTP server or synchronized triggering of several cameras) in the LAN.
Flash units
The camera is compatible with all flash units that support Nikon iTTL flash exposure.
Lenses
All lenses with a Nikon F bayonet that have at least an aperture transmission according to the Ai standard can be used on the camera . AI lenses only work in manual or aperture priority mode.
GPS connection
The camera has a combined interface for cable release and GPS receiver like the manufacturer's own Nikon GP-1 module . It enables easy geotagging of JPEG and NEF files. In addition to the GPS data, the GPS interface also processes compass information ( heading ). Third party modules use this function.
Nikon D4S model
In March 2014, the manufacturer introduced the enhanced model Nikon D4S . A feature that has changed compared to the original model is exposure metering and autofocus for every single shot, even with fast series of images. The model has the following features, among others:
- Exposure index from ISO 100–25,600, expandable to ISO 50–409,600
- Continuous shooting speed of 11 frames per second, with auto focus and exposure metering working for each individual shot
- Full HD video at 60 fps
- Smaller size RAW files ( S-RAW )
- Ethernet connection with 1000 Mbit / s
- Battery type EN-EL18a for up to 3020 releases per battery charge
- EXPEED-4 processor
When ready for operation, the camera weighs 1.35 kilograms (without lens).

- ↑ Nikon (among other manufacturers) gives the sub-pixels instead of the number of pixels, i.e. H. counts the red, green and blue sub-pixels individually. The manufacturer therefore specifies the rear display with 307,200 [pixels] × 3 [colors] = 921,600 [sub-pixels] or approx. 921,000 points.
