The Nikon D50 is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Nikon , which was launched on the market in June 2005.
technical features
The 6- megapixel - image sensor in the DX format produces images with a maximum size of 3008 × 2000 pixels. The recordings can either be saved lossy as JPEG with 8 bit color depth or lossless in the proprietary raw data format NEF with 12 bit color depth. A combination of saving NEF and JPEG at the same time is also possible, but only the basic quality level is available for the JPEG. Only SD cards with a maximum capacity of 2 GB can be used as storage media for the camera .
The exposure time is 1/4000 to 30 seconds and long exposure ( bulb ). A self-timer is available, a cable release thread is not, but the camera can be triggered using an infrared remote control.
The exposure index can be selected from ISO 200 to 1600, both in automatic and manual mode. The available different exposure modes Program AE , aperture priority , shutter priority and manual exposure. In addition, there are a number of subject programs such as fully automatic, portrait, landscape, close-up (macro - only useful in conjunction with the appropriate lens), sports and night photography.
The camera has a metal tripod thread on the underside with which all commercially available tripods can be used.
The camera was produced in the housing colors black and silver / black.
Lenses
The camera has an F-bayonet for interchangeable lenses and can use almost all lenses intended for this. In the absence of a diaphragm driver, the exposure metering and automatic exposure cannot be used with old manual lenses, but the automatic spring diaphragm does work . It makes sense to use the camera only with AF Nikkor lenses and corresponding lenses from other manufacturers. With the built-in focusing motor, the camera also supports all old autofocus lenses of the 35mm era without a built-in autofocus motor.
The DX format sensor, which is smaller than 35 mm film (36 mm × 24 mm), results in an image cropping by a format factor ( crop factor) of 1.5. In order to cater to the special features of digital SLR cameras, the manufacturer introduced a new line of lenses, the DX Nikkor lenses . However, due to the smaller image circle, this can only be used to a limited extent on the 35mm cameras.
The camera body was also sold as a “kit” together with the AF-S Nikkor DX 18–55 mm F3.5–5.6G ED zoom lens . This corresponds to approx. 27–84 mm for small pictures. The camera was also available as a “DX Super Kit”, which also contained the zoom object AF-S Nikkor DX 55–200 mm F4-5.6G ED (corresponding to 84–305 mm small image).
screen
There is a 2-inch LCD on the back of the camera to check the recordings and to display the settings menu . The model does not have a live view function for searching for a subject with the monitor.
The manufacturer specifies a capacity of more than 1000 images for the lithium-ion battery . However, around 500 to 600 images are realistic.
lightning
The camera has a fold-out miniature flash and a hot shoe for external flash units , with a fast flash sync speed of up to 1/500 second. A SecureDigital card slot is available for storing the recordings . The image data is transferred to the computer via a USB-2 connection (type Mini-B ). Two standards are available: Mass storage (enables connection like a USB mass storage device ) and PTP . Since transferring the image data from the camera to a computer requires a great deal of electrical energy, it is recommended to use a separate card reader for transferring the data in order to conserve the charge level of the battery.
equipment
The camera accessories include:
- Power supply: The scope of delivery included an EN-EL3 lithium ion battery and the fast charger MH-18a . The battery type EN-EL3e of newer camera models can also be used. The same applies to corresponding batteries from other manufacturers. The camera can also be operated with the EH-5 power supply unit.
- Flash units: The camera supports the Nikon flash units SB-400 (ultra-compact), SB-600 (standard), SB-800 (professional) and certain types from other manufacturers. The TTL control does not work with older flash units .
- Lenses: All Nikon AF lenses can be used on the camera. The aperture ring no longer has any function, but is always set to the smallest aperture.
- Viewfinder accessories: The camera has the usual rectangular viewfinder connector from the manufacturer. The DG-2 viewfinder magnifier and the DR-6 angle viewfinder are available .

Individual evidence
- ↑ Nikon (among other manufacturers) counts the subpixels of each pixel, ie the red, green and blue channels of each pixel individually, and therefore specifies the rear display with 43,200 [pixels] × 3 [colors] = 129,600 or approx. 130,000 pixels.
