The Nikon D40 is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Nikon , which was launched in December 2006. The manufacturer aimed them at entry-level photographers .

technical features

The 6,24- Megapixel - Image Sensor delivers images with a maximum of 3008 × 2000 pixels. It has a size of 23.6 mm × 15.8 mm (manufacturer designation DX format ) and comes from the Japanese manufacturer Sony . The images can either be saved as JPEG with 24 bit color depth or lossless as proprietary RAW ( NEF format) with 36 bit color depth (12 bits per color channel).

The exposure time can be set from 1/4000 to 30 seconds. A possibility of long exposure ( bulb ) and a self-timer are also available. The camera can also be triggered via an IR remote control. This has the advantage that the trigger does not have to be held down. The camera has a flash sync time of 1/500 second. The series frame rate is up to 2.5 frames / second (with noise reduction switched off and not in HI-1 mode ), which is held indefinitely in JPEG mode.

The camera offers an adjustable exposure index of 200 to 1600. In addition, the HI-1 mode can be set, in which the image signal is amplified in accordance with ISO-3200. Increased image noise must be accepted here.

Lenses that are to be operated on the camera must have their own autofocus motor if they are to focus automatically. This is possible with the manufacturer's own AF-S and AF-I lens series .

The camera also has the following features: a 2.5-inch monitor, a built-in flash with a guide number of 17, three autofocus measuring fields, as well as various functions for subsequent editing of images in the camera.

The camera was initially only sold as a "kit" with the AF-S DX 18–55mm f / 3.5–5.6G ED II lens . Later the body could also be purchased individually.

Model variant Nikon D40x

In spring 2007 the manufacturer introduced a variant of the camera described above. This has another CCD sensor with a resolution of 10.2 megapixels (3872 × 2592 pixels) and a frame rate of 3 frames per second (D40: 2.5 frames). The flash sync time has been extended to 1/200 second by the mechanical shutter. The sensitivity of the sensor starts with the exposure index ISO 100.

Both cameras were marketed in parallel by the manufacturer. The D40x has not been offered by Nikon since the end of 2008.
