The Nikon D70 is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Nikon , which was launched in March 2004. The manufacturer aimed them at beginners in photography .
technical features
The 6.1 megapixel sensor allows images with a maximum of 3039 × 2014 pixels. It has a size of 23.7 mm × 15.6 mm (manufacturer designation DX format ). The images can either be saved lossy as JPEG with 8 bit color depth with a maximum of 3008 × 2000 pixels or lossless as a proprietary raw data format with 12 bit color depth. The manufacturer uses its proprietary NEF format. A combination of the simultaneous saving of RAW and JPEG is also possible.
The exposure time can be set from 1/8000 to 30 seconds in 55 steps, a long exposure ( bulb ) is also available. The camera can also be triggered via an optional IR remote control. The maximum exposure using bulb mode via remote release is half an hour, directly on the camera it is only limited by the power supply.
The camera offers an adjustable exposure index from ISO 200 to 1600, both in automatic and manual mode. Different exposure modes are available: program automatic, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure. There are also a number of subject programs: fully automatic, portrait, landscape, close-up (macro), sports and night scene.
There is a colored LC screen on the back of the camera to check the recordings and to display the settings menu . As with many other SLR cameras, this monitor cannot be used to search for a subject because the folding mirror covers the sensor. However, this has the advantage of less heating of the sensor and the associated lower noise . The manufacturer specifies a capacity of more than 2500 images for the lithium-ion battery . With autofocus, exposure measurements, playback and flash, however, values around 500 pictures are more realistic.
There is a second, black and white, illuminated LC screen on the top of the camera. It is used to clearly display the selected exposure mode, exposure time, aperture, battery level, remaining recordings and similar information. It can also be used for various settings such as exposure and flash compensation.
The camera also has a fold-out flash and a hot shoe for external flash units , with a flash sync time of 1/500 of a second. There is also a white autofocus auxiliary light on the front.
A CompactFlash card slot, which can also accommodate a microdrive, is available for storing the recordings . The image data is transferred to the computer via a USB connection (type Mini-B ). Two standards are available: Mass storage (enables connection like a USB mass storage device ) and PTP . At around 1 MB / s, the transfer rate corresponds to the USB standard 1.1. A separate CompactFlash card reader with a USB 2.0 port is therefore recommended for large memory cards. With the CF memory card , the camera only supports the FAT32 file system .
Extremely short shutter speeds (1/8000 s) can cause a magenta cast in dark parts of the image, which increases towards the right edge of the image. In practice, however, the problem is not noticeable.
Lenses
The camera has an F-bayonet for interchangeable lenses and can use all the lenses provided. However, restrictions must be expected with older lenses. For example, the camera can not measure exposure in conjunction with manual lenses ( MF lenses ). MF lenses can therefore only be used in fully manual mode, but not when set to one of the automatic programs.
The sensor, which is smaller than 35 mm film (36 mm × 24 mm), results in an image cropping by a format factor ( crop factor) of 1.5. In order to cater to the special features of digital SLR cameras, the manufacturer introduced a new line of lenses, the DX Nikkor lenses . However, due to the smaller image circle, this can only be used to a limited extent on the 35mm cameras.
The camera housing was also supplied together (as a kit ) with the AF-S Nikkor-DX 18–70 mm / 3.5–4.5 G ED zoom lens , optionally with the AF-Nikkor 70–300 mm / 4–5.6 G sold. Only in Europe was there a further, particularly inexpensive option, the package with the AF Nikkor 28–80 mm / 3.3–5.6 G, which is actually intended for 35mm cameras .
Model variant D70s
The Nikon D70s model variant was launched in April 2005 and replaced the production of the D70 model. Technically, the camera corresponds in image resolution and image processing speed to the model D70 described above . However, the camera has a larger display and a connection for a cable remote release. The USB 2.0 standard is also supported, but only with USB 2.0 full speed . This offers the same data transfer rate as a USB 1.1 interface (up to approx. 12 MBit / s or 1.5 MB / s). The changed menu navigation and the optimization of the autofocus can also be obtained for the D70 model via firmware update.
Production of the camera ceased in September 2006.

- ↑ Nikon (among other manufacturers) counts the subpixels of each pixel, ie the red, green and blue channels of each pixel individually, and therefore specifies the rear display with 43,200 [pixels] × 3 [colors] = 129,600 or approx. 130,000 pixels.
