history

Early history and the Middle Ages

The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes (today: World Heritage Site ) leads past the village to the east (roughly along today's L 3189) , which formed the border of the Roman Empire - to which the village belonged - to Germania magna .

The oldest surviving mention of the village as Obha comes from August 13, 1219 and can be found in a letter of protection from Pope Honorius III. for the Konradsdorf Monastery . Later forms of the place name are Oberahe or Oberawe .

Early modern age

In the Holy Roman Empire , the village belonged to the Freigericht Kaichen , which came under the rule of the Burggrafschaft Friedberg in the 15th century . With this it fell to Hessen-Darmstadt in 1806 .

In Oberau, the particular law of the Kaichen Free Court, the Friedberger Police Regulations, applied . In 1679 it was renewed and printed. This is the first time that it can be put into writing. She mainly dealt with administrative , police and regulatory law . In this respect, the Solms land law remained the main source of law for the broad area of civil law . The Common Law was, moreover, if all these regulations did not contain provisions for a fact. This legal situation remained in effect in the 19th century after Oberau was transferred to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. It was not until the Civil Code of January 1, 1900, which was uniformly valid throughout the German Reich , that this old particular law was suspended.

Modern times

Between the two world wars, pottery was the main source of income for the residents. This is where the local Uzname comes from : "Owerer Dippe".

On October 1, 1971, Oberau was incorporated into the Altenstadt community.
