The 400-meter race of the men at the Olympic Games 1904 in St. Louis was on August 29, 1904 Francis Field discharged. There were no preliminary runs, all participants contested the run together.

There are two details about their number, depending on the source. At SportsReference and on the IOC page , twelve runners are named, while the talk speaks of 13 athletes. His version is supported by the start photo ( see below ), on which 13 participants can be seen on closer inspection, one of them starting behind the runners arranged next to each other in front of the athlete on the inner lane, as described for the Megede .

In this competition, too, the Americans made the decision about the medals among themselves. Harry Hillman won ahead of Frank Waller , Herman Groman won the bronze medal.

Herman Groman took the lead after about 70 meters and got some advantage. The field was divided into two groups. After about 200 meters, Harry Hillman took the lead from third place and Joseph Fleming caught up with the front runners from the second group. An attack by George Poage was repulsed by Fleming and Frank Waller, so that finally five runners sprinted for victory. In the end, Hillman pulled about three yards away from Waller, who was closely followed by Groman. Fleming and Prinstein were almost tied another two yards back.

Harry Hillman won the first of his three gold medals. Two days later he was also successful over the 400 meter hurdles and another day over the 200 meter hurdles. The Olympic runner-up Frank Waller also won silver in the 400 meter hurdles behind Harry Hillman. The fifth Meyer Prinstein - also referred to as Myer Prinstein in many publications - had his strengths above all in the vertical jumps. He was Olympic champion in the long jump and triple jump , but also finished fifth in the 60 and 400 meters.
