George Underwood (born November 4, 1884 in Manchester , New Hampshire , † August 28, 1943 in Boston ) was an American athlete and sports journalist .
At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , Underwood, who was competing for the New York Athletic Club , won the gold medal in the team run over four miles. A few days earlier he had finished fourth in the 800-meter run ; his result in the 400-meter run is not known.
Underwood later became a noted sports journalist. He reported on boxing matches for the New York World newspaper . He was then a sports editor for the New York Morning Telegraph , the Boston American, and the Boston Globe . He was also responsible for public relations for Madison Square Garden .
