The Soviet Union took part in the VII Winter Olympics in 1956 in the Italian municipality of Cortina d'Ampezzo with a delegation of 53 athletes in six disciplines, including 47 men and 6 women. With seven gold, three silver and nine bronze medals, the Soviet Union was the most successful nation at the Games.
The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the speed skater Oleg Goncharenko .
