The Linux Foundation is an amalgamation of the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and the Free Standards Group (FSG). The goal of the non-profit consortium is to support and promote the growth of Linux . The Linux Foundation promotes, protects and standardizes Linux by offering uniform resources and services that are required by projects for open source software in order to successfully work with proprietary platforms such as B. Windows to compete.

The Linux Foundation has over 1000 members from the IT areas of hardware , software , network and telecommunications . While the cost of the "Collaborative Projects" in 2015 was estimated at $ 5 billion, in September 2017 they reached $ 15.6 billion.

history

On January 21, 2007, the Linux Foundation was founded from a merger of the “Open Source Development Labs” (OSDL) and the “Free Standards Group”.

In September 2009 the Linux Foundation was joined by the microprocessor manufacturer VIA Technologies , the microprocessor architect ARM Limited and the software manufacturer Citrix, as well as other members .

In August 2010, the software developer Qualcomm Innovation Center (QuIC) joined.

In July 2011, Toyota became the first major automobile manufacturer to join the Linux Foundation. The microblogging platform Twitter joined the Foundation in August 2012.

In November 2016, Microsoft joined the Linux Foundation with a platinum membership.

tasks

In addition to standardization, there is the legal protection of open source developers, the payment of important Linux developers such as Linus Torvalds or Greg Kroah-Hartman , the provision of a neutral forum for cooperation between Linux companies and the protection and administration of the Linux brand the main tasks of the Linux Foundation.

Working groups

In addition to the most well-known working group, the Linux Standard Base , there are other working groups that deal with standardization. The OpenI18n group is working on a basis for the linguistic internationalization of programs and distributions in order to localize them later more easily . The OpenPrinting working group deals with the demands on professional printer solutions such as management, reliability, security, scalability, etc., while the Accessibility group defines standards to enable access to Linux systems for people with disabilities. The openHPC initiative takes care of the "upper end" of the performance spectrum of modern computing with Linux .

Other, sometimes smaller, working groups each deal with different sub-areas of the overall topic of standardization of Linux.

Members and Funding

The Linux Foundation is largely financed through membership fees.

The Linux Foundation divides its members into Platinum , Gold and Silver Members according to their annual subscription . As of November 19, 2016, the following companies and research institutions are platinum and gold members:

Information technology hardware software Network and telecommunications Others

The over 100 Silver Members include, for example, Adobe , AMD , ARM , Barnes & Noble , Canonical , China Mobile , Daimler AG , Dell , DreamWorks SKG , EMC Corporation , Epson , JP Morgan , Lexmark , LG , Linpus , NTT , Nvidia , MIPS Technologies , Parallels , Red Hat , Ricoh , Siemens , Texas Instruments , Twitter , VIA , VMware and Yahoo .

Use of donations

Donations are "100% used for diversity projects".

Certifications

Since 2016, the Linux Foundation has been offering several certificates as a further development of the “Massively Open Online Course” (MOOC) “Introduction to Linux”:

Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS)
Certified "intermediate level knowledge of administration and troubleshooting in Linux environments"
Linux Foundation Certified Engineer (LFCE)
