Orshanka ( Russian Орша́нка ; Mari Ӧрша or Ӧршасола ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Mari El in Russia with 6589 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 30 km as the crow flies north of the republic capital Yoshkar-Ola . It is located on the Oschla, a right tributary of the Little Kokschaga (Malaja Kokschaga), and its right tributary Orsha.

Orshanka is the administrative center of Orshansky Rajons and the seat and only locality of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Orshanka.

history

The place was founded in 1820. On August 28, 1924, it became the administrative seat of a canton of the then Autonomous Oblast of Mari (later ASSR of Mari), which was converted into a Rajon on June 20, 1932. In 1975 Orshanka received urban-type settlement status.

To the west, the settlement is bypassed by the federal highway R176 Vyatka , which connects Cheboksary via Yoshkar-Ola with Kirov and Syktyvkar . In an easterly direction, the 88K-015 leads to the neighboring district center Nowy Torjal .

The nearest railway station with passenger traffic is in the republic capital Yoshkar-Ola on the route from Zelenodolsk . The continuation of the line to Jaransk , completed in 1976, runs around 15 km west of Orshanka, but today (as of 2015) it only serves freight traffic.
