The Ostvorstadt , Upper Sorbian , with around 6,000 inhabitants, is the third largest district of Bautzen by population . Historically and occasionally still colloquially, today's district of Nordostring, east of the outer city wall, is called "Ostvorstadt". The district area lies in the historic districts of Bautzen and Strehla .
The district is structurally extremely heterogeneous. In the district there are approaches of block perimeter development from the period after 1900 around Käthe-Kollwitz-Platz, right next to the hussar barracks, which are no longer used for military purposes and which housed large parts of the former 3rd Royal Saxon Division . In other areas to the east of Stieberstrasse, the residential area of the Nordostring district continues. The residential area Allendeviertel (derived from it in the vernacular also called " Chileviertel "), in which the majority of the population of the Ostvorstadt lives, is characterized by five-storey GDR new buildings as well as by staggered, low bungalow-style houses . Single-family homes , there are also in the settlement area Strehla ( Třělany ).
According to the Bautzen rent index, large areas of the Ostvorstadt are considered good residential areas. Compared to the Gesundbrunnen residential area , the number of inhabitants has only decreased slightly since the fall of the Wall . However, the district is characterized as " overaged " and with 34.1% has the highest proportion of pensioners of all districts (Bautzen overall: 26.2%). Since numerically equivalent immigration from other parts of the city does not seem certain for the future, it is possible that the currently unproblematic area could face more problems in the future. In the medium to long term, there are plans for the selective demolition of living space in this area, particularly in the Allendeviertel.
In the area of the former Martin Hoop high school there was a settlement of cord ceramics around 4000 years ago . In 1920, amphorae , jugs and stone tools decorated with string by Paul Bruger were found here.
According to the heterogeneous structure of the district, there are also several district centers. The most important is to be found in the Allendeviertel on the Hanns-Eisler-Passage, in the immediate vicinity of which a polyclinic , a sales hall, a service combine and the high-rise café were built in GDR times . Even today there is a concentration of sales facilities and medical supplies here.
