Otto Friedrich Wilhelm von Papstein (born March 19, 1820 in Parlin , Naugard district , † April 14, 1894 in Prenzlau ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 10th Infantry Brigade .

Life

Otto was a son of the Prussian Rittmeister a. D. Georg von Papstein († 1856) and his wife Friederike, née Grothe († 1862).

Military career

Papstein attended the city school in Massow and the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 5, 1837, he was transferred to the 24th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as Portepeefähnrich and was promoted to Second Lieutenant by mid-February 1839 . In 1849, during the March Revolution , he took part in the suppression of the revolutionary unrest in Dresden and Iserlohn and in Baden in the battles near Kirchheim-Bolanden , Dürkheim, Wiesenthal, Neudorf and Kuppenheim . By the beginning of July 1857, Papstein was promoted to captain and was appointed company commander on April 12, 1859 . In this capacity he took part in the 1864 war against Denmark at the crossing over the Eider , the battles at Missunde and Osterdüppel as well as the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen and the crossing to Alsen . For his work he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords, on March 10, 1864 .

He was promoted to major on February 11, 1865, and was transferred to the Brandenburg Fusilier Regiment No. 35 , with whom he fought in the 1866 war against Austria near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz . For this he received the Crown Order III on September 20, 1866 . Class with swords. Papstein was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1868 and at the same time as commander of the III. Battalion transferred to the Guard Fusilier Regiment . During the mobilization on the occasion of the war , Papstein was appointed commander of the Mecklenburg Fusilier Regiment No. 90 on July 18, 1870 . On August 21, 1870, Papstein took over the Guard Fusilier Regiment that he led in the Battle of Sedan and the Siege of Paris .

Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, he was appointed colonel on the day of the imperial proclamation and on March 29, 1871, he was appointed regimental commander. In addition, he received the Mecklenburg Military Merit Cross 1st Class on May 2, 1871 , the Iron Cross 1st Class on June 13, 1871 and the Order of Saint Anne II Class with diamonds on April 30, 1874 . In position à la suite of his regiment, Papstein was commissioned on March 13, 1875 with the command of the 10th Infantry Brigade in Frankfurt (Oder) and on April 13, 1875 he was appointed commander of this brigade . Papstein married on October 8, 1846 in Prenzlau Marie von der Hagen (1826–1882), a daughter of Karl von der Hagen (1801–1872), Herr auf Schmiedeberg.
