Papi is a song by the American singer Jennifer Lopez from her seventh music album Love? (2011). The Latin- oriented title was written by RedOne , AJ Junior, BeatGeek, Teddy Sky, Bilal Hajji and Jimmy Joker, with RedOne, BeatGeak and Jimmy Joker handling production.

The song was originally supposed to be released on April 19, 2011, but the song had already hit the Internet and was released as a promo single on April 17, 2011 through a campaign on Lopez's Facebook page . Papi has been praised by music critics, who usually consider the song to be a "highlight" of Love? describe. Some critics even said that Papi could be as successful as their comeback single On the Floor . Upon its release, the song charted in several countries, reaching the top ten in Finland and the top 20 in Spain . The song was officially released as a single on September 25, 2011.

Background and composition

Papi describes Lopez's longing to dance for her husband and is a Latin and electro title with dance elements. The melody contains “heavy” beats and “soft” synth sounds. According to Rick Florino from the website Artistdirect.com, the song also uses elements of “progressive” house music .

The song appeared alongside I'm Into You , a collaboration with Lil Wayne , and (What Is) Love? on April 17th as the third of three promo singles. I'm Into You was later announced as the album's official second single. In the music video for I'm Into You , one briefly hears an excerpt from Papi .

Papi was published three days before the originally planned release date because Lopez posted the Life for Love? Campaign started for Love? and papi advertised. The promo singles were released earlier because enough fans were involved in the campaign.

criticism

Staff from entertainment website Idolator said, "The title is similar to 'On the Floor' and is ready to storm the clubs, so why shouldn't 'Papi' be as successful as 'On the Floor'?"

Joe Guerra of The Houston Chronicle called Papi a "highlight" of Love? .

Rick Florino from the website Artistdirect.com praised the title: "Lopez [is] at its peak at the moment." Florino also highlighted Lopez's charisma: "Your Latin image with this title will mesmerize listeners." He also praised the chorus and the "majestic hookline ."
