Pathfinder (so the international cinema title; original title: Ofelaš or Veiviseren [both for German signposts]; alternative German television title: Die Rache des Fängerensuchers ) is an award-winning adventure drama by the Sami - Norwegian director Nils Gaup from 1987. Gaup processed in the Oscar- nominated youth film a folk tale that his grandfather had told him during his childhood.

Aigin, a 16-year-old seed , returns from the hunt to find at home that father, mother and his little sister were brutally murdered by the marauding “ Tschuden ”. Immediately afterwards he himself is discovered and hit by a crossbow arrow while escaping . Wounded, he can save himself to the neighboring camp, where he is taken in, cared for and on top of that finds a pretty girl in Sahve who falls in love with him straight away.

But the Tschuden ( represented as Vikings for clothing and equipment ) have persecuted him and threaten to kill Aigin's helpers as well. While almost all of the seeds flee from the attackers towards the coast with sacks and bags, Aigin, three allies and Raste, the shaman of his rescuers, bring up the rear . Although they inflict some losses on the murderous warriors from the Baltic States , they are quickly defeated. When Raste is tortured, Aigin tries to save him and offers himself to the Tschuden as a guide to the nomads' new refuge . Despite Aigin's admission, one of the warriors goes back to Raste and kills him unnoticed. In the end, the forced-recruited boy scouts lead the berserker horde to their ruin by leading them over the only icy mountain pass to the coast and using an avalanche to ensure that the entire rope team falls down a deep slope.

Pathfinder was the first feature film to be made entirely in a Sami language . The shooting took place mainly in southern Finnmark around Kautokeino . The extreme weather conditions that often prevailed there in winter were particularly problematic. On the first days of shooting the film, temperatures of -47 ° C were measured and the cameras stopped working. The same resident, musician and singer Nils-Aslak Valkeapää , who plays Siida-Isit in the film , made a special contribution to the mystical atmosphere of the work of his friend Nils Gaup with his traditional yoiks .

particularities

The German theatrical version from 1988, the later video release ( Marketing Film ) and the TV version of Pathfinder were slightly shortened to get a lower FSK-12 rating . At the end of January 2005, the DVD of the film distributor Kinowelt was released with an FSK-16 approval. This version contains the previously cut 6 seconds again.
