Paul May , actually Paul Ostermayr (born May 8, 1909 in Munich , † February 25, 1976 in Taufkirchen ), was a German film director , film editor , screenwriter and producer of feature films.

biography

The son of the film producer Peter Ostermayr and his wife Olga, née Wernhard, also turned to the world of film after graduating from high school in Feldkirch. He attended the state school for photography and worked in a copier .

From 1930 he worked as an editor; from 1933, often as assistant director on the same projects . By 1939 he was responsible for the film montage of over 30 productions , including Max Ophüls' The Bartered Bride (1932) .

In 1937 he co-directed Das Schweigen im Walde with Hans Deppe . In 1938 he directed the Ganghofer adaptation Der Edelweisskönig , still under the name Paul Ostermayr, for the first time alone. In order to avoid confusion with the other “Ostermayrs” active in the film industry, he called himself Paul May when he resumed his filmmaking after the Second World War .

Only the post-war film brought him success as a director. He worked until the late 1960s before retiring. May's greatest directorial successes were without a doubt the films 08/15 , And the Forests Sing Forever , Via Mala and Scotland Yard chases Dr. Mabuse , as well as the street sweepers of the 1960s on German television Die Schlüssel and Melissa by Francis Durbridge .

Numerous German-speaking actors worked under his direction, such as Margarete Haagen , Edith Schultze-Westrum , Gert Fröbe , OE Hasse , Joachim Hansen , Joachim Fuchsberger , Erich Schellow , Paul Edwin Roth , Albert Lieven , Hans Nielsen , Ellen Schwiers , Hansjörg Felmy , Gustav Knuth , Helen Vita , Werner Lieven , Armin Dahlen , Hans Pössenbacher , Antje Weisgerber , Germaine Damar , Christiane Maybach and Liane Hielscher .

From 1964 May worked almost exclusively for television. The director was married to the actress Hertha von Walther in his first marriage, to the actress Annelies Reinhold in his second marriage , and to the screenwriter Ille Gotthelft in his third marriage .

The artist was buried in the Munich forest cemetery.
