At first Suter worked mainly in bronze and natural stone and with lead castings. In 1958 he created his first iron sculptures, which he initially drove out of a shell-like hollow body. Soon he moved away from plastic volume, his works became more constructivist in style. From 1972 Suter's steel sculptures assumed monumental dimensions. In doing so, he developed a non-representational two- and three-dimensional language of forms, a principle of “drawing in space” (Julio Gonzalez).

From 1980 onwards, Suter's sculptures became more filigree: he reduced the shape of the iron elements more and more to straight lines and sweeping arches that expressively grow into the room.

The plastic, touching the ground only at a few points, appears light and striving upwards, completely contradicting the heavy material of iron. “I try to use and assemble the selected molded parts in such a way that the material presence is not so much manifested as movements in space, forces in space,” (Paul Suter). Since 1982 Suter has also created series of works on paper.
