Peter Boudgoust (born December 16, 1954 in Mannheim ) is a German lawyer and former director of the Südwestrundfunk .

Life

Boudgoust grew up in Ilvesheim near Mannheim, attended the Albertus Magnus School in Viernheim and, after graduating from high school, studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim . After the completion of the second state exam, he worked as a social department at the District Office Main-Tauber-Kreis . Then he was press spokesman for the Stuttgart regional council . From 1986 to March 1995, Boudgoust was employed in the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg, most recently as head of Department I, which is responsible for personnel, budget, finance, media, information and communication systems.

Since 1995 he has worked for Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) or, after the merger of SDR and Südwestfunk, for the successor company Südwestrundfunk (SWR). From 1995 to 1998 he was legal advisor and finance director of SDR, from 1998 to April 2007 he was administrative director of SWR and managing director of SWR Holding GmbH.

On December 1, 2006, he was elected by the SWR Broadcasting and Administrative Board in the second ballot with 62 of 83 votes cast as the successor to the previous SWR director Peter Voss . He took office on May 1, 2007. Boudgoust's only opposing candidate in the second ballot was Willi Steul , who at the time was the state broadcaster of the SWR for Baden-Württemberg. The second opposing candidate, SWR television director Bernhard Nellessen , withdrew his candidacy after the first round of voting because he had only received 15 votes.

Boudgoust had already held a number of functions within the ARD before his election as artistic director . In 1999 and 2000 he chaired the ARD Finance Commission and was temporarily chairman of the ARD / ZDF working group on broadcasting fees . He was also a member of the ARD strategy group, which prepares recommendations for the directors' conferences on future topics such as the digitalization of broadcasting.

In 2009 and 2010 Boudgoust was ARD chairman; his predecessor in this function was Fritz Raff from Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), his successor from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2012 was the then director of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), Monika Piel . As ARD chairman, he was also a member of the Finance Group of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Boudgoust has been campaigning for a public service offer for the young target group since 2011. In 2016, under his leadership, the online media offer funk , the content network of ARD and ZDF for teenagers and young adults between 14 and 29 years of age, was created. As the online director of ARD, he drove the development of the ARD audio library and the ARD media library , which has combined the content of all ARD channels on one platform since 2018. Under Boudgoust's directorship, the two SWR orchestras, the SWR symphony orchestras Baden-Baden and Freiburg and the Stuttgart radio symphony orchestra , were merged to form the SWR symphony orchestra against public protest .

In 2016, before the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate and the state elections in Baden-Württemberg, Boudgoust came under fire when the SWR did not initially invite AfD representatives to the TV candidate rounds because Prime Minister Kretschmann and Prime Minister Dreyer had canceled their appearances had threatened, AfD representatives should be invited.

On May 8, 2016, Boudgoust was confirmed in office; his third term began on May 1, 2017 and should end in 2022. On December 7, 2018, he announced in Mainz in front of the SWR Broadcasting Council that he would hand over his office early in mid-2019. He justified this with his 65th birthday this year and the view that it was hubris "to want to set the course until the last possible day". On May 23, 2019, Kai Gniffke was elected by the entire committee of the SWR Broadcasting and Administrative Board to succeed Peter Boudgoust and succeeded him on September 2, 2019 as director of Südwestrundfunk.

Boudgoust is president of the Franco-German television channel Arte . According to the SWR press office, he intends to perform this task until the end of his mandate at the end of 2020.

In 2010, the ARD broadcasters published the salaries of their directors for the first time. Boudgoust gave his annual salary at 273,000 euros. In 2013 he received 309,000 euros, in 2016 it was 338,000 euros. The salaries and pensions of the artistic directors are higher than those of the Chancellor, who is responsible for over 83 million people, and are the object of public criticism and outrage .

Boudgoust is married, has a son and lives in Kirchheim unter Teck .
