He lives in Würzburg , where he has worked at the Julius Maximilians University there since 1964 , most recently as senior physician at the Institute for Anesthesiology. He has held a professorship for preclinical emergency medicine since 1996 and has been a lecturer in emergency medicine even after retiring from active clinical service in 2006.

Peter Sefrin studied medicine at the University of Würzburg from 1961 to 1967 and graduated with the state examination.

His time as a medical assistant lasted until 1969, on September 30, 1969, he received his medical license . He then worked as an assistant to Karl-Heinz Weis at the Institute for Anaesthesiology at the University of Würzburg until 1973 , where he also received his doctorate in 1970 .

On November 7, 1973 Sefrin was recognized as a specialist in anesthesiology, he was still employed at the institute, since April 1, 1976 as an academic adviser in civil service for life. He completed his habilitation in 1978 with a thesis on changes in the metabolism of multiple injuries . He then took on a senior physician position with a focus on ear, nose and throat medicine , neurosurgery and ophthalmology . Peter Sefrin retired at the end of September 2006, but continues to be active in his areas of interest.

Scientific career and perception in the professional world

His first publications between 1965 and 1971 repeatedly dealt with the requirement to train all medical students in first aid .

In his scientific career he initially devoted himself primarily to the problems of resuscitation . A large number of own investigations, especially on cardiac pressure massage, served as the basis for general statements.

Starting in 1967, he played a key role in setting up the emergency medical service in Würzburg, both as a practical practitioner and as a scientific companion and author of numerous publications.

From 1976 to 1980, on behalf of the German Road Safety Council and the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, he headed a working group for the medical support of the project pilot project for emergency rescue in Lower Franconia , which provided important impetus for the restructuring of the rescue service.

He analyzed the protective effects of seat belts in cars in retrospective and prospective studies and examined the care of polytrauma patients as the basis of his habilitation thesis.

He scientifically worked out new therapy methods and new drug concepts in emergency medicine. In-house research in the field of emergency medicine, the technical equipment of the rescue service and the care of emergency patients was supplemented by contract research by the Federal Highway Research Institute (on the subject of children's accidents) and the Federal Office of Administration (on the supply of medical supplies in Germany).

More than 300 publications identify him as a specialist in the further development of emergency medicine. He is the editor of the book Emergency Therapy , a standard work in German emergency medicine.

He is often a guest of honor, speaker and / or moderator at conferences on the subject of emergency medicine and rescue services.

As an active emergency doctor in Würzburg, he temporarily drove a Porsche with blue lights as an emergency vehicle .
