Petr Fiala (born September 1, 1964 in Brno ) is a Czech political scientist , historian and politician and has been Prime Minister of the Czech Republic since November 28, 2021 .

Fiala was Professor of Political Science and Rector of Masaryk University in Brno from 2004 to 2011 . From 2012 to 2013 he was the Czech Minister of Education. Since January 2014 he has been party leader of the liberal - conservative Občanská Demokratieická strana (ODS).

Life

Academic career

Fiala studied Bohemian Studies and History at the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University, today's name Masaryk University , in Brno. He then worked in the regional museum in Kroměříž . In 1989 he received his doctorate as a historian from Masaryk University.

After the Velvet Revolution and the end of communism, Fiala contributed to the development of the political science discipline in the Czech academic sphere, which had been made impossible by the regime . The Institute of Political Science at Masaryk University was founded in 1990 and Fiala became its director in 1993. In 1996 Fiala received his doctorate in political science and he became a lecturer at the Charles University in Prague.

In 2002 he was appointed Professor of Political Science at Masaryk University, and in 2004 he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. From 2004 to 2011, Fiala was the rector of Masaryk University. Fiala's academic work focused on comparative political science , European politics, political parties and interest groups, as well as the political dimension of religion.

In 2011 Fiala became a scientific advisor to Prime Minister Petr Nečas . After Josef Dobeš resigned as Minister of Education, Fiala was appointed to the Petr Nečas cabinet on May 2, 2012 as a non-party Minister for Youth, Education and Sport . He held this office until July 10, 2013. Fiala refused to participate in the following cabinet of Jiří Rusnok , as he did not agree with the unauthorized appointment of the government by President Miloš Zeman .

In the House of Representatives elections in October 2013 , Fiala was elected first in the ODS list for South Moravia in the House of Representatives of the Czech Parliament. He joined the ODS in November 2013 and was elected party chairman in January 2014. In 2016, 2018 and 2020 he was confirmed in this office. In November 2017, Fiala was elected deputy chairman of the House of Representatives.

For the parliamentary elections in 2021 , Fiala stood as the top candidate of the opposition electoral coalition SPOLU , which was made up of the parties ODS, KDU – ČSL and TOP 09 . SPOLU sharply demarcated itself from Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and criticized, among other things, his conflict of interest in relation to the Agrofert holding company he founded and the management of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic . In the elections in October 2021, the SPOLU alliance was the strongest electorate with 27.8 percent, just ahead of Babiš's ruling party ANO with 27.1 percent. After SPOLU's election victory, Fiala claimed the office of Prime Minister and entered into negotiations with the second opposition electoral alliance made up of the Pirate Party and STAN . On November 11th, the parties signed a coalition agreement.

On November 28, 2021, Fiala was appointed Prime Minister by President Miloš Zeman . The Petr Fiala government began its work on December 17, 2021 and was sworn in.

Fiala is married to Jana Fialová, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University, and they have three children.
