The Atavillos Alto district is located in the province of Huaral in Region Lima in Peru . The district was founded on February 12, 1821. It has an area of ​​345 km². The 2017 census counted 751 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1718, in 2007 it was 976. The administrative center is the 3255  m high village of Pirca (or San Pedro de Pirca) with 462 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pirca is just 67 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Huaral .

Geographical location

The Atavillos Alto district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the south-east of the Huaral Province. The district is bounded in the north by the Río Chancay and its left tributary Río Baños. The main ridge of the Western Cordillera with the continental divide runs along the eastern district boundary . There the 5359  m high Nevado Alcay rises.

The district Atavillos Alto borders in the southwest on the districts Atavillos Bajo and San Miguel de Acos , in the north on the districts Pacaraos and Santa Cruz de Andamarca , in the east on the districts Santa Bárbara de Carhuacayán and Marcapomacocha (both in the province of Yauli ) as well as in South to the districts of Huaros and San Buenaventura (both in the province of Canta ).
