PokerStars is an online poker room based on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea .

history

PokerStars was founded on September 11, 2001 by Mark Scheinberg and his father Isai Scheinberg through the Costa Rica- based company Rational Enterprises . PokerStars is licensed by the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission . With a market value of $ 3 billion, PokerStars is the largest privately held gaming company and the largest poker room in the world.

PokerStars funds the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure as well as the tournament series European Poker Tour , Asia Pacific Poker Tour and Latin American Poker Tour . The site also organizes the World Championship of Online Poker , the world's largest online poker tournament series.

Due to the increased influence of the internet on the game of poker since 2003, WSOP main event winners Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer have qualified through Pokerstars.

In 2005, the website was eGaming Review for Best Poker Operator of the Year (original Best Poker Operator of the Year nominated). In 2006, Bluff Magazine named PokerStars the best poker site.

In the summer of 2007, Pokerstars took over Full Contact Poker (FCP) . Since then, Daniel Negreanu has also been part of Team Pokerstars, who was chairman of FCP. All players have been transferred to PokerStars with their money.

On July 19, 2009, PokerStars held the largest online poker tournament to date, with 65,000 participants , as part of a Guinness world record attempt . PokerStars exceeded their own world record set on December 28, 2008 of 35,000 players by as much as 30,000 players. On December 27, 2009, Pokerstars set another world record with 149,196 players, surpassing the world record set on July 19, 2009 by 84,196 poker players. The last world record was set on June 16, 2013 with 225,000 participants. On February 23, 2014 this was supposed to be outbid with 230,000 participants, but this did not happen with 211,619 participating players. On October 5th, 2015, PokerStars hosted a one-cent buy-in tournament that saw 253,698 players take part, breaking the world record.

On April 15, 2011 at around 19:30 CET, the domain pokerstars.com with the domains of three competitors was confiscated by the FBI on suspicion of illegal gambling activities under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act . PokerStars has blocked access to PokerStars to players in the United States. According to PokerStars, the service was not affected for other players, and in particular their funds.

Later, all US player credits were withdrawn and PokerStars withdrew from the US market. Furthermore, an agreement was made with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) that allows PokerStars to use the PokerStars.com domain again.

On December 19, 2012, PokerStars was granted a German online poker license in accordance with the Schleswig-Holstein Gambling Act . In June 2014, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker were bought by Amaya Gaming Group Inc. for just under five billion US dollars . In 2017, PokerStars hosted the live tournament series PokerStars Championship and PokerStars Festival .

On August 1, 2017, the parent company Amaya Gaming Group Inc. renamed The Stars Group Inc. In the same year, the company was valued at $ 1.31 billion and continues to be the market leader to this day.

The online poker site offers ten variants of poker games: Texas Hold'em , Omaha, Omaha Hi / Lo (8 or Better) , Stud, Stud High / Low , Draw Poker , Badugi , Razz , 2-7 Triple Draw and 2-7 Single Draw . The limits are up to 1000/2000 US dollars . In addition to cash games , various tournament modes and Sit & Gos are offered. There is also the option of playing with play money.

In October 2017, PokerStars released Power Up, a game variant not known from land-based casinos for the first time. Power Up is based on Texas Hold'em, but with special cards it is clearly based on video games like Hearthstone . The game is seen as an attempt to establish poker as an e-sport .

In total, over 200 billion hands have been played on PokerStars.

Team PokerStars

PokerStars has signed contracts with professional poker players and provides these players with entry fees for certain tournaments. In the Team PokerStars has some of the most successful poker players in the world. Players with Team Pro Online status regularly stream their game on the Twitch platform . George Danzer played for Team PokerStars.de until the end of 2016 . Jan Heitmann and Natalie Hof also stood by his side until the end of 2015 .
