RA the Rugged Man (or RA for short , real RA Thorburn ) is an American rapper from Suffolk County on Long Island , New York .

resume

RA is of German descent on his mother's side, he spent a lot of time in Siegelsbach in his childhood . He began his career at the age of 12 and signed his contract with the major label Jive Records under the pseudonym Crustified Dibbs at 18 . The album Night of the Bloody Apes , produced for Jive Records, was never officially released. Due to his sometimes violent and shocking behavior towards the fans and the entire music industry, he was shunned by all labels and A & Rs in the 90s and downright banned.

Nevertheless, RA enjoys a high reputation and respect not only with the fans, but also with the artists he has worked with, including The Notorious BIG , Mobb Deep , Tragedy Khadafi , Wu-Tang Clan , Jedi Mind Tricks , Agallah , Sadat X , Prince Paul , Company Flow as well as with the producers The Alchemist , Erick Sermon , J-Zone , Stoupe the Enemy Of Mankind , DJ Quik . RA appeared on all three Rawkus Soundbombing albums and several maxi singles. It wasn't until 2004 that RA released his long-awaited debut album Die, Rugged Man, Die on the indie label Nature Sounds .

His lyrics for Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story for the group Jedi Mind Tricks caused quite a stir . He tells the story of his father, Staff Sergeant John A. Thorburn, who fought in the Vietnam War and was badly damaged there by the US military's chemical defoliant Agent Orange . The shocking text about the combat experiences and the later destroyed life of the US soldier and his disabled born children, expressed in a 40 line rap song, was even printed in the US magazine Source .

In May 2013 RA released his second official album Legends Never Die , with features from Talib Kweli , Eamon and Tech N9ne, among others .

In 2016 RA was featured on the mixtape " Essahdamus " by the German rapper Kool Savas on the song "Wahre Liebe" together with Samy Deluxe , who is a big fan of RA. The special thing about his part was that RA rapped his text bilingually, half in German, half in English.

Other engagements

He is also known as a film and cinema specialist and writes a monthly column for the US trend magazine Mass Appeal as well as several articles in magazines such as The Source , Vibe and Complex . During an interview with the US actor Chuck Norris , he let himself be hit by him and thrown to the ground with a shoulder throw.

RA also wrote three scripts in collaboration with director Frank Henenlotter : Sick in the Head , Love Is Hell and Bad Biology ; the latter was made as a film in 2008.
