Ratt are an American glam metal band from San Diego , California . The band celebrated their greatest successes in the 1980s and, along with the band Mötley Crüe , with whom they were friends, was one of the best-known bands of the genre, especially in the USA.
history
Mickey Ratt: 1979-1982
Ratt were founded in 1979 under the name Mickey Ratt by Stephen Pearcy (vocals) and Chris Hager (guitar). The line-up was completed by the later Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E. Lee , the bassist Matt Thorne and the drummer John Turner. The band released a self-funded single called Dr. Rock , which was published in an edition of 100 and distributed in concerts.
Turner, meanwhile, first had to clear his drum chair for David Alford, who in turn made room for Khurt Maier shortly afterwards and later played with Thorne in Jailhouse . In this line-up, the band recorded the song Tell the World for the first metal massacre sampler, before the rhythm section was replaced by Joey Cristo (bass) and Bobby Blotzer (drums). In addition, two new guitarists joined the band , Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini . A little later, Cristo made way for Juan Croucier.
The successes: 1983–1992
This line-up recorded a self-titled EP under the new name Ratt and finally the debut album Out of the Cellar . The album made it to number 7 on the US Billboard charts and was a surprise success in 1984. It sold two million copies in the US alone. Extensive tours with Ozzy Osbourne , Mötley Crüe and Billy Squier quickly contributed to Ratt becoming the new shooting stars of the scene. Despite their new status, the band continued to give small club concerts, where they each performed under the name The Gladiators .
The second album, Invasion of Your Privacy, continued seamlessly from the debut and was also a success. The band toured Europe in support of Ozzy Osbourne and played at the legendary Monsters of Rock Festival in Castle Donington, where a severed pig's head flew onto the stage in addition to the urine- filled cups required for the festival . Bon Jovi acted as the opening act on a first headline tour through America .
Just four weeks after the third long player was released under the title Dancing Undercover , the album was awarded gold for half a million units sold. At the beginning of 1987 the band toured with Cheap Trick , later with Poison and Queensrÿche in the opening act through the USA.
With Reach For The Sky (1988) and Detonator (1990) Ratt had two more successful albums before Robbin Crosby was represented by an unknown tour guitarist because of drug problems. The band's management then tried to hire Michael Schenker ( UFO , MSG ), who had previously represented the indisposed Crosby at an MTV unplugged session, as a permanent new guitarist, which later resulted in the new band Contraband . In late 1991 Stephen Pearcy left the group and formed the band Arcade . Ratt were history for the time being.
Confused years: 1993-2005
In 1994 it became known that Robbin Crosby had become infected with the HI virus through his drug addiction and was suffering from AIDS . In 1997 Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini and Bobby Blotzer reformed the band. Together with Vince Neil bassist Robbie Crane, they recorded the album Collage , which contains new songs as well as remnants from Reach For The Sky and Detonator . The album could not build on the successes of earlier times, but a loyal fan base brought Ratt quick sales of 40,000 albums. A tour with the second guitarist Kerri Kelli followed, but ended abruptly with Stephen Pearcy falling off the stage.
In 1998 Ratt signed with Sony and recorded a new album, simply titled Ratt . In 2000 Stephen Pearcy surprisingly left the band. Ratt first brought Lynch Mob singer Robert Mason as a replacement, but on a tour with the LA Guns and Warrant , ex- love / hate singer Jizzy Pearl was at the microphone. The second guitarist was surprisingly John Corabi (ex-singer of Mötley Crüe , Union, The Scream). A European tour with Alice Cooper and Dio followed.
Stephen Pearcy, meanwhile, started his own version of Ratt and toured the United States with Vince Neil , Slaughter , Britny Fox and Vixen . A subsequent legal battle saw Pearcy as a loser. He was no longer allowed to perform under the name Ratt and had to transfer the income from the tour to the band. However, the "real" Ratt were not allowed to release any albums without Pearcy, which puts the decision into perspective.
Blotzer and DeMartini then started a 55-gig US tour, which Ratt headlined with support bands Warrant, Dokken , Firehouse and LA Guns . During this time Pearcy put together a Ratt tribute album, which can boast a top-class line-up with bands like Slipknot , Cold , Saliva , Drowning Pool or Panteras Dimebag Darrell. On June 6, 2002, Robbin Crosby died at the age of 41 from a heroin overdose and not, as is occasionally falsely reported, from the effects of AIDS. In the summer of 2005, Ratt toured the USA again. The Rock Never Stops tour featured Cinderella , Quiet Riot and Firehouse.
Reunion: from 2007
At the end of 2006 singer Jizzy Pearl announced his exit, which gave rise to speculations about a reunion. The band did not comment on the rumors. Nevertheless, the first concert dates of the Reunion tour were announced in the spring. Over the summer, the band toured the United States with Stephen Pearcy (vocals), Warren DeMartini and John Corabi (guitars), Robbie Crane (bass) and Bobby Blotzer (drums) together with Poison . At the same time as the reunion, the greatest hits album Tell The World - The Very Best of Ratt and the DVD Videos from the Cellar were released . After Japan and Australia in autumn 2007, another US tour was announced for January 2008 with Vince Neil , Skid Row and Slaughter . The end of this tour was also the end of the collaboration with John Corabi, who left the band after the concert in Virginia Beach on November 5th, 2008.
In the spring of 2010 the CD Infestation was released with the line-up Stephen Pearcy (voc.), Warren Demartini (guit./voc.), Bobby Blotzer (dr.), Robbie Crane (bass) and Carlos Carvazo (guit./voc.) Roadrunner Records.
In March 2012, bassist Robbie Crane announced his departure from the group and became a member of Lynch Mob . Juan Croucier returned to the line-up for him. With this step the band, apart from the late guitarist Robbin Crosby, was back together in their most commercially successful formation.
In April 2014 singer Stephen Pearcy left the band again. In 2016, Joshua Alan was announced as the new singer for Ratt.
