Rebel Yell (English for: 'Rebellious Scream') is a song by British rock musician Billy Idol from 1983 that he wrote with guitarist Steve Stevens . It was first released as a single in October 1983 and on Idol's album of the same name in November 1983.

background

During his appearance on the VH1 Storytellers program , Billy Idol revealed how the song came about: He was at an event where he watched Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger , Keith Richards and Ron Wood , who were also present Rebel Yell branded bourbon . The brand was unknown to him, but he liked the name. He then decided to write a song called Rebel Yell . Together with Steve Stevens he finally wrote the lyrics of the song.

The instrumental introduction, which sounds like a combination of an electric guitar and keyboard , was played by Stevens alone with a guitar. The inspiration for this came from Leo Kottke . Originally, these 16 bars were an introduction to his guitar solo, but Idol suggested using it as an intro for the song.

Since the musicians had no idea how the song should end, there was only one groove section. Forsey let Idol run free with a microphone in hand, and the latter spontaneously composed the lines:

I walked the world for you, babe
A thousand miles for you
I dried your tears, of pain, babe
A million times, for you

I'd sell my soul, for you, babe
For money to burn, for you
I'd give you all, and have none, babe
Just to, just to, just to, just to, to have you here by me, because

Idol took this section again later with a Neumann - microphone on to perfect the recording.

The song was z. B. in the episode Deadly Orchids by Knight Rider as well as in the family comedy Look, Who Is Speaking 2 . It was also heard in films like Time of Retribution and Big .

The video for Rebel Yell is based on classic vampire films . The members of Scooter drive through a gloomy area at night under a full moon until they come to a castle. There they intone Rebel Yell in front of dancing people in rococo clothes who turn out to be vampires. In the end, scooters are shown as vampires themselves.
