action

The film is set in the US state of Minnesota in 1990. Detective Bruce Kenner is investigating the case of John Gray, who is alleged to have sexually abused his 17-year-old daughter Angela, but cannot remember it. The case becomes known to the police through Reverend Murray, in whose church Angela is hiding and there wrote a transcript of the incident. Although John cannot remember that he is a serious alcoholic, he tells the police that his daughter's statement must be true because she would never lie. John is taken into custody, although he makes a confused and mentally unstable impression and it is not clear whether the events and descriptions of father and daughter are true. The well-known psychologist and university professor Kenneth Raines is consulted. With the help of so-called hypnotic regression, he tries to release images from the unconscious to bring clarity to the case. However, this only makes John more psychotic and accuses police officer George Nesbit of having performed a satanic ritual on his daughter, in which John claims to have taken photos himself. As the investigation continues, Angela's brother tells Roy about similar incidents during his childhood. Gradually, more and more residents of Satanism are suspected, as is Angela's grandmother Rose, who jumps out of the window in a panic attack . Even in connoisseurs, nightmares and delusions about Satanism are gradually spreading ; he too was hypnotized by Raines . He gets caught up in a psychotic vortex until he realizes that Angela made up the rape story to manipulate her environment. All suspects are exonerated. However, Angela cannot be induced to understand her wrongdoing and continues to claim in a TV interview that everything is true. Kenner and Raines have to recognize that hypnotic regression has put "false" images in their heads that they also believed to be true.

Trivia

The film title refers to the psychological treatment method of hypnotic regression . This is used several times in the film and was a common method at the time, but came under fire after it became known that the memories evoked do not necessarily correspond to the facts. This is indicated in the credits of the film.

In the early 1980s, reports of satanic rituals surfaced in the United States, particularly in rural areas. This often led to panic and distrust in the communities. The film was inspired by these real events.

In a shop in town hangs a poster of the Polish black / death metal band Behemoth from 2014, but the film is set in 1990.
