Richard Voss (different spelling: Richard Voss ; born September 2, 1851 , Gut Neugrape, Pyritz district , Pomerania ; † June 10, 1918 in Berchtesgaden ) was a German writer .

Life

Richard Voss made numerous trips at a young age, especially to Italy . As a Johanniter he took part in the war of 1870 and was wounded. He then studied in Jena and Munich. From 1874 he lived alternately in Königssee near Berchtesgaden and in Frascati near Rome . Numerous artists and aristocrats were guests in his “Bergfrieden” house in Königssee, as well as in the Villa Falconieri in Frascati, which later went to Wilhelm II. In 1884 he was appointed librarian at the Wartburg . In 1878 he married Melanie von Glenck. In addition, he maintained homosexual relationships, which his contact in the highest circles, e. B. with Ernst von Wildenbruch and Prince Georg of Prussia (1826-1902), made problematic.

At the age of 10, he had already met Mauritia Mayer during his spa stays in Sankt Zeno near Bad Reichenhall and was on friendly terms with her despite the age difference of 18 years until her death. In his bestseller novel Zwei Menschen (the first edition was published in 1911 and had 97th editions in over 1 million copies), he set her an idealized literary monument in the main character Judith Platter .

In 1916, Voss suggested that an oversized Bavarian lion be struck as a war memorial in the Falkensteinerwand on Königssee. To prevent the project, the forerunner of today's Berchtesgaden National Park was created.

Voss died on June 10, 1918 in Berchtesgaden and was buried there. His grave is in the Old Cemetery next to the Franciscan Church .
