Robert Tomaszek (born June 16, 1981 in Bydgoszcz ) is a German - Polish basketball player . Born in Poland, Tomaszek, whose family had lived in Germany since 1987, came into contact with basketball in his new home. After a total of five years in the United States , where he studied and improved his skills as a player, he returned to Germany as a professional in 2004, before playing in the Czech Republic , Ukraine and his native country. After playing in the top German division for the s.Oliver Baskets Würzburg in the 2011/12 season, he will play in the 2013/14 basketball league for the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg.

Career

Tomaszek, who came to Germany with his parents in 1987, began playing basketball in Germany and most recently played in the youth teams of the BSG Bremerhaven before he went to Aspen High School in Colorado for an exchange year in 1999 . Here he intensified his focus on basketball, although his coach initially advised him not to seek a scholarship at an NCAA Division I university , which is considered a prerequisite for a professional athletic career in the United States. So Tomaszek stayed after high school in the USA and followed the advice of his coach to the extent that he first began studying at Eastern Wyoming College, a community college in Torrington . Here played for the university team Lancers in the "National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association" (NJCAA). In 2002, after two years, he had the opportunity to continue his studies and college basketball career at Texas Tech University in Lubbock , whose college team Red Raiders in NCAA Division I was coached by the renowned but controversial coach Bobby Knight . In 2003 it was enough for the team from the Big 12 Conference at the National Invitation Tournament after a narrow defeat with one point difference in the semifinals against the eventual winner Red Storm of St. John's University (New York) to a third place. The Red Storm later had to give back the title because they had used an ineligible player. A year later, the Red Raiders reached the national NCAA finals again , in which, however, they lost in the second round against the Hawks of Saint Joseph's University top-seeded in their regional group .

Although it wasn't enough for Tomaszek after the two years in the NCAA Division I for his big dream NBA , he started a professional career after finishing his studies in 2004. After trial training in Spain and Italy, he first returned to Bremerhaven , where he and the Eisbären, the professional team of his former club, made it to the top German league in 2004/05 after only two defeats this season. Despite solid values in his first year as a professional, Tomaszek did not find an agreement with his home club about a place in the first division squad. After audition in the NBA Summer League 2005, he could not recommend himself for a contract with the French record champions ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne . At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he first had a contract with BK Kondoři from Liberec in the Czech NBL , before moving to league rivals from Prostějov in January 2007 . With this club he reached the runner-up behind defending champion ČEZ Nymburk. After another season in Prostějov, Tomaszek himself moved to the series champion from Nymburk , with whom he was able to win the championship again at the end of the 2008/09 season.

At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Tomaszek initially had a contract in Simferopol , Ukraine , before returning to his native country and joining PBG Basket from Poznan . In the qualification for the championship play-offs one failed at the end of the season to Energa Czarni Słupsk. In the following season Tomaszek then played for the league competitor PGE Turów from Zgorzelec on the German border together with Konrad Wysocki , who as a German Pole had a career path similar to Tomaszek. With PGE Turów he reached the runner-up in 2011 in the Polska Liga Koszykówki after losing to serial champion Asseco Prokom Gdynia in the final series in just under seven games. Tomaszek returned to Germany for the 2011/12 basketball Bundesliga and signed a contract with the first division promoted s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg , who surprisingly made it to the semi-finals of the championship play-offs. Nevertheless, Tomaszek left Germany again and played in the 2012/13 season for Energa Czarni from Słupsk again in Poland, but were defeated in the first play-off round in just under five games against the later new master Stelmet Zielona Góra . His former Würzburg coach John Patrick finally brought him back to the top German division for the 2013/14 basketball Bundesliga , in which he will play for his new club MHP Riesen from Ludwigsburg .
