Roller Girl (Original title: Whip It ) is an American dramedy from 2009 by Drew Barrymore . Barrymore made her directorial debut with this film and was also active as a producer and actress. It is the film adaptation of the novel Whip It by Shauna Cross with Ellen Page in the lead role.

action

The film is about the rebellious teenage high school student Bliss Cavendar, 17, who wants to break out of her dreary everyday life in the Texan town of Bodeen. Instead of continuing to take part in beauty pageants just as her mother Brooke imagined, she joins a group of roller skaters without her parents' knowledge and becomes a member of a roller derby team. Here, the sheltered and petite Bliss has to learn the rough rules of full contact sport . Due to her speed, however, she quickly becomes the star of the scene, which is not hidden from her parents and leads to conflicts.

The film shows how the initially shy and fearful main character gains self-confidence and maturity and learns to assert himself in everyday life. In contrast to other coming-of-age films , the main character tries to settle the conflicts that have arisen with her parents towards the end of the plot and is willing to compromise. In return, they accept their daughter's wish to continue playing roller derby.
