The FCK Rolling Devils are a wheelchair basketball club from Kaiserslautern , whose name sponsor is 1. FC Kaiserslautern . The first team of the Rolling Devils played in the 1st Bundesliga from 2014 to 2016 and currently plays in the third-class regional league middle.

history

2009 to 2011: founding phase and regional league

On September 27, 2009, a wheelchair basketball team was founded at 1. FC Kaiserslautern and integrated into its basketball department . Central figures were the former national players Sascha Gergele and Klaus Weber as well as the former women's national coach and then U19 national coach Christa Weber. Starting with the first tryout on September 29, 2009, this team started training. It was named FCK Rolling Devils on February 18, 2010.

At the beginning of the 2010/2011 season, the German Wheelchair Sports Association (DRS) started playing at the level of the third-tier regional league center. In September 2010 the team won the regional cup middle against the Lux Rollers in the final. The Rolling Devils qualified for the DRS Cup and were the only regional division to reach the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by the first division Mainhatten Skywheelers . In the Regionalliga Mitte, after a head-to-head race with the Lux Rollers during the season, the team won the 2011 championship without losing points and the associated promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga South thanks to a victory in a direct encounter on the last match day .

2011 to 2014: Second division, European Cup and establishment of a department

For the 2011/12 season the FCK Rolling Devils strengthened themselves with German junior national players and founded a second team in the fourth-class Oberliga Mitte. In the DRS Cup, the team failed in the group stage against record champions USC Munich , but was able to finish the second division season as runner-up behind the Belgian team Roller Bulls from Sankt Vith . The second team occupied a place in the middle of the table in the Oberliga Mitte.

The 2012/13 season also brought the end of the group phase against the Mainhatten Skywheelers in the DRS Cup and another runner-up in league play, this time behind Heidelberg Rolling Chocolate . The second team again occupied a midfield position in the Oberliga Mitte. In addition, the Rolling Devils, as successors to the DRS, took part in the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) game for the first time and took third place out of five teams in EuroLeague 3.

On March 21, 2013, it was decided to found an independent wheelchair basketball department and, following confirmation by the 1. FC Kaiserslautern association council, it was completed in December 2013.

Before the 2013/14 season, the Rolling Devils had to record several departures in the coaching staff and player squad, but were able to compensate for them by the start of the season. There was another coach change in the first half of the season. In the DRS Cup, the team reached the quarter-finals for the second time and was eliminated there against the reigning runner-up Mainhatten Skywheelers. The Rolling Devils won the championship in the 2nd Bundesliga South on the third last match day with a win against their pursuers Sabers Ulm and ended the season without losing points with promotion to the 1st Bundesliga. With Mark Beissert (332 basket points), the Rolling Devils also provided the top scorer of the second division 2013/14 season. The second team also finished the season as champions in the Oberliga Mitte and rose to the Regionalliga Mitte.

2014 to 2016: Bundesliga and independence

For the 2014/15 season, players left again, including the Devils' second team, and several newcomers and a new coach were signed for the first division squad. In September 2014, the Rolling Devils hosted a tournament for the first time with the Central Region Cup and won it with their participating second team by beating the Trier Dolphins' second team in the final . As a result, FCK Rolling Devils 2 qualified for the DRS Cup for the first time, where they were eliminated in the group phase against second division club RSV Lahn-Dill 2. As in the previous season, there was a change in coaching for the first team in the first half of the season. The first team of the Rolling Devils made it into the DRS Cup quarter-finals for the third time in their history, where they lost to the reigning Challenge Cup winner BG Baskets Hamburg . With a win against pursuers RBC Köln 99ers , the Rolling Devils secured their relegation in the Bundesliga four game days before the end of the season and ended the season in seventh place as the best promoted team since 2011. The second team ended their first season in the regional league with a midfield placement.

On July 16, 2015, the Rolling Devils were spun off as an independent club with 1. FC Kaiserslautern as the name sponsor and on December 12 at the annual general meeting of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the FCK Rolling Devils department was dissolved.

In August 2015 the Rolling Devils got into financial difficulties after a tax audit of their time as FCK department due to a high back payment, which however could be solved in the following weeks in cooperation with 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Lebenshilfe Westpfalz eV . As a further measure of financial consolidation, the Rolling Devils separated from their trainer in November.

For the 2015/16 season, the squad changed due to the departure of some substitute players and the commitment of young national players. In September 2015, the Rolling Devils once again hosted the Central Region Cup, but were unable to defend the previous year's title with their second team. In the DRS Cup, the first team made it to the quarter-finals again, but lost to the eventual German champions and cup winners RSB Thuringia Bulls from Elxleben . On the 14th matchday, the Rolling Devils achieved relegation in the first Bundesliga with an away win at the promoted team from the 2nd Bundesliga North, Hannover United, and ended the season in seventh place. With Jake Williams, a Rolling Devil was one of the top ten best Bundesliga scorers for the first time (4th place with 373 points).

Since 2016: new start in the regional league

In April 2016 the Rolling Devils elected a new board. In August 2016, the club announced the withdrawal of its first team from the wheelchair basketball Bundesliga for financial and sporting reasons and the restart with the second team in the Central Regionalliga. Due to the change in personnel, the Devils had to forego participation in the Central Region Cup, but were able to successfully finish the season with a third place in the table. For the 2016/17 season, the Rolling Devils are continuing their personnel realignment by signing players from the region. They also took part in the regional cup again and took third place there. In the restructured regional league, the season ended with another third place. In the 2018/19 season, the Devils were eliminated in the regional cup in the group stage, but won the league championship with ease. However, they did not exercise their right to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga South for financial reasons and also played in the Regionalliga Mitte in the 2019/20 season. This season was canceled prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Devils finished fourth with fewer completed games than the competition. The COVID-19 pandemic also led to such a massive drop in sponsorship funds that FCK Rolling Devils for the season 2020/21 had to forego reporting a team.

Others

Naming

The naming of the 1. FC Kaiserslautern wheelchair basketball players is shaped by the public image of the club as a whole. The name Rolling Devils is based on the nickname Die Rote Teufel for the football team of the entire club and, like the FCK professional footballers, the FCK wheelchair basketball players have had a devil as a mascot since 2012 with the name Deiwel , the Palatinate idiom for devil. Identical to the Fritz Walter Stadium in football, the Rolling Devils' venue is called Hell , the magazine published on home game days is called Inferno , the team's traditional song is Hells Bells, and the specially composed title In der Hölle has been the official one since 2013 Devils song.

Game and training facilities

The FCK Rolling Devils teams played their home games until the 2013/14 season in the sports hall of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern . This is also where the free training of the Rolling Devils 2 and the young players takes place. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, the home games will be played in the gym of the Schillerschule. Since the turn of the year 2013/14, the first team has been training there, which was previously located in the gymnasium of the primary school on the Betzenberg . From June 2014 to April 2016, the Rolling Devils cooperated with the football club DJK SG Eintracht Kaiserslautern and shared their clubhouse.

Spectators and fan culture

Choreography by the Rolling Devils Supporters for the 2014 second division championship

From 2012 to 2016, the Rolling Devils received an average of more than 250 spectators for their home games, making them one of the most popular teams in German wheelchair basketball. Wheelchair basketball at 1. FC Kaiserslautern is very similar to the club's soccer area : the unofficial fan club Rolling Devils Supporters , which has existed since 2012, has an overlap with soccer fan groups and the fan culture is characterized by style elements from the soccer environment . After their promotion to the second division in 2011, the Rolling Devils of Heidelberg Rolling Chocolate were declared arch rivals. Since 2013 there has been a friendship between the Rolling Devils and the Trier Dolphins, which is atypical for wheelchair basketball .

Media presence

Since July 2009, the Rolling Devils operate their Internet - Homepage and since September 2009, a Facebook -Presence which is now one of the most popular Facebook pages in German wheelchair basketball. From 2014 to 2016, the Devils were one of the few German wheelchair sports clubs to operate their own YouTube channel. From 2014 to 2016, the Rolling Devils were also active on Twitter .

Awards

In 2011, the FCK Rolling Devils were awarded the Bronze Star of Sports by the German Olympic Sports Confederation for their social commitment . In 2013 they received the bridge prize of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for civic engagement by people with and without disabilities . At the Rheinpfalz athlete election in Kaiserslautern, the Rolling Devils were voted Team of the Year 2013 and 2014. In 2014, 1. FC Kaiserslautern awarded Sascha Gergele the bronze merit pin in recognition of his achievements for FCK Rolling Devils. At the Rheinpfalz athlete election in Kaiserslautern, Devils captain Matthias Heimbach was voted athlete of the year 2015.

Trivia

In September 2012 the then FCK professional footballer Mohamadou Idrissou took part in the training of the Rolling Devils. Since March 2013 the Rolling Devils have been represented with exhibits in the permanent exhibition of the FCK Museum in the Fritz Walter Stadium.
