history

Red and blue Obernzenn Castle

The von Seckendorff family ruled Obernzenn from the 13th century . Both the Red and the Blue Castle in Obernzenn stand on the remains of a medieval castle complex . While the Blue Palace was built in three construction phases, the Bavarian General Field Marshal and Knight's Councilor of the Knightly Cantons of Altmühl , Johann Wilhelm Gottfried Freiherr von Seckendorff-Gutend, left the Red Palace in 1745 on the occasion of his marriage to his third wife Franziska Friederica von Stain zum Rechtenstain and zu Bächingen to build. He died two years after construction began.

The plans for the regular three-wing complex that shares the courtyard with the neighboring Blue Castle probably came from Leopoldo Retty . The construction was carried out by Johann Jakob Fraas and the Ansbach agricultural inspector Johann David Steingruber . Steingruber followed Retty on the post of Ansbach court architect.

The Red Castle is a simple and regular structure, the facades of which are structured by pilaster strips and wall panels. The coat of arms of the von Seckendorff family with the year 1745 is located above the entrance door. Inside the castle there are other coats of arms. The ceiling paintings in the two stairwells show geniuses holding coats of arms .

The Red Castle now houses a museum educational workshop.
