The Slavic place name was first mentioned in 1074 as "Rothiboresdorf". In the centuries that followed, a wide variety of spellings were used, including "Rokeborthorf", "Rodboritz", "Rothebariz", "Rottenbericz", "Rottemitz" and "Roten Borietz". The form “Rottewitz” is documented for 1791, in 1875 the name “Rottwitz” also existed. The name can be traced back to the Old Sorbian personal name "Ratibor" and thus means "settlement of the people of a Ratibor".

The round hamlet founded by the Sorbs was in a block and striped area of about 147 hectares in 1900 , where the residents farmed and cultivated wine. In 1487 a Vorwerk in the place is mentioned. The corridor outside the old town center with its large four and three-sided courtyards has remained largely undeveloped to this day.

Rottewitz was and is parish to Zscheila . The manorial rule was exercised by the Meissen Abbey in 1547, after which Proschwitz was subordinate to the Hayn office as an official village . The administration of the place was incumbent on the Meißen Prokuraturamt in the 18th century. In 1856 Rottewitz belonged to the Meißen court office and then joined the Meißen district administration , from which the district of the same name emerged.

On the basis of the rural community order of 1838 , Rottewitz gained its independence as a rural community . It was incorporated into Winkwitz together with Proschwitz on October 1, 1939 and became part of Meißen on January 1, 1994.
