Niederfähre is located in the district “Niederfähre m. Vorbrücke ”in the center of the Meissen urban area on the right-hand side of the Elbe , directly on the Elbe . Neighboring to the southeast is the Vorbrücke district , Proschwitz to the north and Zscheila to the east . Opposite, on the other bank of the Elbe, are Niedermeisa , Fischergasse and Albrechtsburg .

The area of the district is largely built up. The houses reach up to the Dammweg that delimits the Elbe meadows. The town center was on today's Lindenplatz, from which the Fährgässchen leads down to the old ferry station. The most important street in the district is Goethestrasse, which runs as federal road 101 via Bohnitzsch to Großenhain . In the other direction, it continues over the New Elbe Bridge , on whose right bridgehead the Niederfähre is located.

Other streets in the district are the Hafenstrasse, Gustav-Graf-Strasse (named after a Niederfährer municipality executive), Wolyniezstrasse as well as Hainstrasse and Hainweg. The development extends in the north to the depression of the Fürstengraben (Teerbach), which drains the Nassau . The Meißner Winterhafen and the stadium on Heiligen Grund, where Meißner SV 08 plays its home games, are also located there. Immediately to the north of the depression are the Proschwitz vineyards .

history

The place name, which is of German origin, was mentioned for the first time in 1342 as "locus iuxta Albeam, qui vulgariter dy nydere vere appellatur", ie as "place on the Elbe, which is commonly called the lower ferry". In the following centuries, a variety of spellings were in use, including "in Nideruere", "die Nydervere", "Nedirfere", "Nedirfeher" and, among other things, "Nieder Fehra" for 1659. The name is self-explanatory and means "settlement on the downstream or lower ferry ".

Hans-Jürgen Pohl explains the name by saying that before the first Elbe bridge was built, the two ferry stations Niederfähre and Oberfähre existed on the right bank of the Elbe. According to a similar interpretation, the corresponding upper ferry started a little further upstream in Cölln .

The alley village with its rows of houses was in a strip corridor similar to a win and, according to its name, had a meaning for the ferry service at the Meißner Elbe crossing. In the years 1350 and 1430 allodies are attested, in 1480 a Vorwerk is mentioned. The parish was and is Niederfähre to Zscheila . The basic rule exercised directly the Prokuraturamt Meissen until the early 19th century. In 1856 Niederfähre belonged to the Meißen court office and then came to the Meißen district administration , from which the district of the same name emerged.

In the years 1791 and 1834 it is mentioned that Niederfähre and Zscheila together formed one municipality. On the basis of the rural community order of 1838 , Niederfähre gained its independence as a rural community . It was already considered a suburb of Meissen, together with the neighboring Vorbrücke . On January 1, 1887, both places merged to form the 94 hectare community "Niederfähre-Vorbrücke". This was incorporated exactly three years later to Cölln and came with this on January 1, 1901 to Meißen. The double name "Niederfähre-Vorbrücke" is also mentioned in 1908, today both places are in the common area "Niederfähre m. Vorbrücke ". In 1997 "Niederfähre / Vorbrücke" was declared a redevelopment area.
