The Slavic place name was first mentioned in 1250 as "Proszwiz". In the following centuries, the spellings “Proschewicz”, “Praschwicz” and “Pruskewicz” were in use. The name can be traced back to the Old Sorbian personal name "Proš" and would therefore mean "settlement of the people of a Proš".

The round hamlet founded by the Sorbs was in a 149-hectare block and striped field on which the residents farmed and cultivated wine. On the Bennokanzel there are remains of a recently recognized castle of the 11th / 12th. Century. A knight's seat existed in Proschwitz as early as 1380, and in 1696 a manor was mentioned, to which the Nassau Vorwerk also belonged. From it went Proschwitz Castle forth. A Dutch windmill, visible from afar, stood on the Bocksberg until 1945 .

Proschwitz was and is parish to Zscheila . The manorial rule was exercised by the Meißen Hospital in 1547, after which Proschwitz was subordinate to the Hayn office as an official village . After that it belonged to the owners of the local manor, which over the centuries included members of the noble families Miltitz , Schilling , Berlepsch , Carlowitz and Lippe-Weißenfeld . The administration of the place was incumbent on the Hereditary Authority of Meissen in the 18th century . In 1856 Proschwitz belonged to the Meißen court office and then came to the Meißen district administration , from which the district of the same name emerged.

On the basis of the rural community code of 1838 , Proschwitz gained its independence as a rural community . It was incorporated into Winkwitz on October 1, 1939 together with Rottewitz and became part of Meißen on January 1, 1994.
