Rudolf Schönwald

Rudolf Schönwald (born June 30, 1928 in Hamburg ) is an Austrian painter , graphic artist , caricaturist and draftsman .

Life

Rudolf Schönwald was born in Hamburg to Austrian parents. He attended elementary school in Salzburg from 1934 to 1938. From 1938 he lived in Vienna. Due to the Nuremberg Race Laws in 1943 he had to flee to Hungary, where he survived as a camp prisoner and as a submarine. In 1945 he returned to Vienna, graduated from high school in 1948 and took drawing lessons from Charles Lipka. From 1948 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Joseph Dobrovsky and Christian Ludwig Martin . From 1955 he ran a litho workshop in Vienna together with Georg Eisler , Alfred Hrdlicka and Fritz Martinz . There were lithographs for Candide and in 1957 etchings for The Adventures of Captain Singleton and in 1964 for Gargantua and Pantagruel . In 1965 work on the woodcut cycle König Ubu began .

From 1968 to 1974 he designed the comic strip Goks for the magazine NEUES FORVM . His wife Gilly Hillmayr wrote the lyrics. In addition to his graphic work, he also designed ceramic murals. Schönwald also designed sets, in 1989 for the song play Mahagonny , The Seven Deadly Sins (Ballet) by Brecht / Weill and didactic play by Brecht / Hindemith for the studio of the Vienna State Opera .

From 1976 to 1993 Schönwald was professor for visual design at the Technical University in Aachen .

Since around 1985 he has been exploring the decaying industrial regions of the surrounding area by drawing from Aachen, thus tackling his late major work of industrial drawings, which he continues to pursue worldwide as a Piranesi of the Borinage .

Schönwald received prizes at the graphics biennials in Lugano , Ljubljana , Liège and Vienna .
