Rutheniridosmin is a rare mineral from the mineral class of the elements , more precisely the metals and intermetallic alloys . It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition (Ir, Os, Ru) and forms idiomorphic tablets and grains as well as inclusions in platinum - iron alloys.

Etymology and history

The mineral was probably discovered in 1936 in the Horokanai site, Uryū River in Uryū-gun on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It is named after the elements ruthenium , iridium and osmium it contains.

classification

In the Strunz system , rutheniridosmin is counted among the metals and intermetallic compounds, a subgroup of the elements. After the 8th edition it forms a group together with Chengdeit , Hexaferrum , Osmium , Rhenium and Ruthenium . In the 9th edition , it forms a subgroup of the platinum group elements with ruthenium and osmium.

In the classification by Dana it forms with osmium, ruthenium, and Hexaferrum Hexamolybdän the Osmiumgruppe, a subset of the metallic elements with platinum group metals and alloys.

Education and Locations

Rutheniridosmin forms in soap deposits that are washed out from ultramafic rocks. It is associated with other iridium-osmium-ruthenium alloys, sperrylite , hollingworthite , iridarsenite , ruthenarsenite , michenerite , laurite , geversite , moncheit and chromite .

In addition to the type locality in Japan, there are finds from Tasmania ( Australia ), Goze Deltschew in Bulgaria , British Columbia and Manitoba in Canada , Amdo in China , Cauca in Colombia , Assosa in Ethiopia , Peyrolles-en-Provence in France , Kozani in Greece , Parapara known on New Zealand , several localities in Russia and Goodnews Bay and Trinity County in the American states of Alaska and California .

Crystal structure

Rutheniridosmin crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system in the space group P6 3 / mmc with the lattice parameters a = 2.726  Å and c = 4.326 Å as well as two formula units per unit cell .
