SAPERE ( S cripta A ntiquitatis P osterioris ad e thicam RE ligionemque pertinentia , "writings later antiquity on ethical and religious questions") is the name of an editing project in Göttingen . The aim of the project is to publish the Greek and Latin texts from the 1st to 4th centuries AD, with critical editions , translations and text comments , which have so far been neglected in comparison to the earlier epochs . 28 volumes have been published in a row since 2000 (as of May 2016).

The name of the company is deliberately linked to the proverb sapere aude , which Kant translated into German with the words: "Have the courage to use your own understanding". The texts are intended both as a basis for scientific discourse in various disciplines and to introduce interested readers.

The publications of the project are published by Mohr Siebeck Verlag Tübingen and the Scientific Book Society in Darmstadt. The editors of the series are New Testament scholars and Graecists Reinhard Feldmeier (Göttingen), Rainer Hirsch-Luipold (Bern) and Heinz-Günther Nesselrath (Göttingen). Ulrich Berner , Barbara Borg , Dorothee Gall , Gustav Adolf Lehmann , Jan Opsomer , Reinhard Gregor Kratz , Maximilian Forschner and Ilinca Tanaseanu-Döbler belonged to the scientific advisory board . The project is funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and, since 2009, by the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .
